Doom 3 BFG Edition PS3

Can I rewind back to 2004 for a moment? The Athens Olympics, the terrible Thailand Tsunami and the release of Doom 3. Seriously Doom 3's release was massive. I was there on that day outside a now defunct shop with 30 others getting my hands on history. I popped the disc in the PC (which mind wasn't strong enough to run Doom 3 at full potential and 2 PCs since still isn't) and was blown away. One thing I hated was PC controls... So I wished for the day it came to consoles!

Well finally it's here, in all its glory. Again it was a first day buy, well bar 2 days as now as a father and husband other things kinda have to come first over this once sacred game. Firstly Doom 3 hasn't changed. It's still the same game, with HD or 3D graphics although some of these textures look very basic close up (better than my 2004 PC). I actually saw a friend running a mod which improved textures on the original and have to say that does look more impressive than this version. Very disappointing that, although the guns look as you would in any FPS. If you go to the Super Turbo Turkey Puncher machine (you get an achievement for using this in the game by the way so start punching those turkeys) you will see what I mean.

So the graphics aren't they are all cracked up to be, or stuck somewhere between 2012 and 2004. The sounds then are a good return to the old, there's nothing wrong here and it sounds perfect for Doom. OK again it's not Call of Duty but it doesn't have to be to be exciting. It creates a fear at times (along with the loss of light) which hasn't been seen in other games since.

Talking about light, lets talk Flashlight. In the original you either used your gun or your flashlight. You couldn't use both. That's gone and that's a crying shame. Why? To make things for 2012's players iD said! It added to the ambience of the original and I'm sad it's gone! It should be at least an option.

The save system is as always clunky (although there is a new checkpoint system it isn't implemented like it games such as Dead Space, and is a hindrance). I find like the original then I am manually saving halfway through. The checkpoint system is not a Unique selling point it's rubbish in fact.

Multiplayer is a good frag fest but I rather Unreal Tournament 3's which is both cheaper and more accessable. Also this seems to have less players online than Unreal and those which are will be serious Doomers which even I struggle to keep up with.

The game includes two expansion packs as well as Doom 1 & 2 and these are as great as ever. Graphically they are what they are, 20 years old and chunky blocks but it still plays well and adds some thrills. They also carry there Multiplayers which is great and you will find people here potentially more than Doom 3!

All in all, this is a nice package. I still love Doom 3, but the memory isn't what it was. Believe it or not I still have my old PC version, popped it in the computer, fired it up and guess what... It wasn't as awesome as I remembered. This game is 8 years old and for the money I could not recommend it highly enough. However this isn't a COD or Battlefield or even Operation Flashpoint: Red River. This is a 2004 clunky shooter, it still is and although this is the best way to play it, you have to approach it with that fact in mind or be left disappointed.
