No sooner does Insomniac release the excellent Resistance 3 and now we are treated to another new game from one of the talented studios famous franchises, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One.
While past games in the series have always played it safe, sticking to what the franchise knows best, All 4 One takes a break from the normal single-player space opera that Ratchet & Clank fans adore so much in favour of new team based gameplay. Offering co-op puzzles similar to Traveller’s Tales’ Lego series, but with characters who have bigger differences between them, instead of the same character but with a grapple or super-strength.
After the high that was A Crack In Time, the story in All 4 One feels like a bit of a step backwards in some respects, however, it is still nonetheless provides the player with a ripping tidal wave of adventure. Set two years after the end of the last game, everyone’s favourite Lombax and his metallic pal are taking a break from Heroing when Dr. Nefarious attempts to assassinate Galactic President Quark. Unfortunately, Ratchet & Clank, as well as Quark and Nefarious, all find themselves kidnapped by an army of unidentified robots, who soon teleport them away. This sets up perfectly for the four player co-op that follows, as the four characters need to put aside their differences and find a way home. This story while feeling every bit as in keeping with the Ratchet and Clank universe, doesn’t feel as strong as the others have been, in fact it feels more of an ‘after-thought’ which just tips the balance of the game towards rubbing you the wrong way.
This is a shame, as the gameplay offers some of the strongest co-op I’ve experienced in a long time. The game really is built for more than a single player with a lobby-like main menu, although if you choose to play solo then you get an AI controlled Clank following you, who is surprisingly good at helping you out (to the point where he finished a objective before I could reach it). Taking the multiplayer route gives you a real feeling of the game should be, with more players enemies are taken down quicker as you can target your fire to create a lethal takedown explosion. In addition, you can complete team-based objectives which increase the experience points you gain; but there is still a competitive slant on the game as at the end of each level there are rewards for completing certain tallies, like most bolts collected or most kills.
Usually it’s the gameplay that really sings in a Ratchet and Clank game and All 4 One is no exception. In addition to some wacky weapons each character has their own personal weapons which relate to how they play in the game. Clank gets a Zoni Ray to slow down enemies, Dr. Nefarious can deploy a Cloaker to turn invisible and Qwark can employ a Quantum Deflector shield that is assassination-proof. There is also the return of old favourites like the Combustor and Mr. Zurkon to ensure destruction.
When it comes to the graphical presentation of games, Insomniac has its vision well and truly set with the characters and environments looking amazing; You won’t be disappointed in the games look, be it the cartoony forests and jungles littered with sci-fi machinery or the icy polar caps, there is something to capture your imagination. Each one of the worlds that you visit adds a fresh new vista and has its own personality. There is never a similar experience in the game’s interior areas, each of them look fresh and have their own dynamic appearance; echoing Insomniacs attention to detail.
There is no arguing that All 4 One feels like a Ratchet and Clank game, but it is missing something. The thing with this series is that there is always a certain little spark gives the games that ‘Awesome’ factor and whether that is the lack of full favour cut-scenes or the plot, that fits in with the universe, but doesn’t hang together on its own, something here just doesn’t feel right. Equally, of course, it could be the pure fact that Insomniac pushed out Resistance 3 just over a month ago and now this. One game had to suffer from a lack of full team attention and while there are certain elements in All 4 One that are strong, the question remains as to whether this would have made a better PSP or PSN game, rather than being sent out as a full blown console release.
