Aliens: Colonial Marines Limited Edition
In partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and developed by critically acclaimed studio Gearbox Software, Aliens: Colonial Marines will bring new levels of bone-chilling suspense and adrenaline-filled action as an authentic addition to the renowned ALIENS franchise canon. The game pits players against the universe’s ultimate alien killing machines, the Xenomorphs, with stunning visuals and adrenaline pumping action, delivering breathtakingly immersive single, cooperative and competitive multi-player modes.
Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe.

As a game it's a very basic first person shooter, the AI is patchy, sometimes good, sometimes bad, there's glitching occasionally especially when playing co-op online, and the graphics are most definitely last generation. It's not awful, but it's not good either, and most disappointing of all looks nothing like what we were shown in promotional videos. There are a couple of redeeming features in the XP system though, allowing you to upgrade your weapons and customise your marines appearance.
It's not all bad though, they have managed to get some things right, and that's the fan service. Despite the last gen graphics the game has the atmosphere of the Aliens franchise spot on. Graphically it could have been better, but it feels like Aliens, and the audio is perfect, the beep of the motion tracker, the sound of the pulse rifle, and the screams of dying aliens are all identical to the movie.
The online multiplayer isn't too bad either, it doesn't have the famous movie locations of the single player campaign, but it eliminates some of the campaigns problems by having everyone controlled by people rather than the games inconsistent AI. Game modes are a little more inventive than the usual FPS staples and taking turns playing as Aliens versus marines is actually quite good fun.
At the end of the day if you're not a fan of the franchise then you aren't going to enjoy this game, it just has too many shortcomings. But, if you love Aliens, and are willing to let things slide a bit for the chance to play as a marine in the films locations then you won't be able to pass on this. It's not the Aliens game we were hoping for, but it does enough right to keep fans happy, even if only for a short while.
Always be suspicious of a game which has no reviews out until the morning of release day. Publishers are normally very proud and want to get reviews out as early as possible to build up anticipation. In this case they knew it was a dud and wanted to stifle the reviewers.
In effect, the game is Duke Nukem 4 Ever but with an Aliens mod pack on it. The graphics are glitchy, the AI is atrocious, the acid blood does no damage, the motion tracker doesn't work properly, the aliens act like zombies, there's no destructible terrain or even bullet holes, there's no physics in any of the world objects, the lip syncing can't have been done in English. On top of all this they have the cheek to offer a Season Pass! No thanks.
Just about the only good thing about this game is that there are no Quick Time Events. But it's so bad some of them would have helped make it more interesting.
Mine arrived on Saturday (today is Monday) and I'm already looking to flog it. It's all just a bit boring and they've removed all the suspense and just chucked aliens at you.
Pah!!!!
