Update 1: Sony has just sent us the following statement, which goes along the lines of no comment really. “With regards to the new CECH-3000B PS3 the information is relevant for Japan only and we have nothing to share at this time.”
Update: Looking at past hardware from the Model CECH 2500 onwards seems to show the same statement, so we aren’t entirely sure what this means, maybe the translation is incorrect. We will await confirmation from Sony and update you.
Original: This seems too good to be true really, but it seems that the new PS3 model that we reported on this morning may be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 2.
Here’s what the Japanese website’s description says:
This product, “PlayStation 2″ are having a compatibility with proprietary software.
If this really is the case then we reckon this will be a big scoop for Sony and will see a large spike of sales for the new PS3, especially from those still clinging on to their PlayStation 2′s.
