Sony Computer Entertainment’s future chairman, Kaz Hirai, has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will not launch in the UK or US until early 2012.
According to a report made by MSN, Hirai also confirmed that, although it won’t be making it to the west in time for Christmas, the device will be available in Japan by the end of 2011.
Although Sony never promised a 2011 release, SCEA boss Jack Tretton claimed that the device would be available by the end of the fiscal year, which sparked speculation that Sony were planning to release the console by the end of the calendar year.
There had been multiple reports suggesting that Sony’s new handheld would see a western release by the end of 2011, but it looks as though that was wishful thinking after all.
A specific release date for the device is expected to drop at Sony’s Gamescom conference, which takes place on August 16th.
