Crytek has today released the CryEngine 3 SDK as a free download, for all non-commercial and educational uses.
The SDK will give you access to the engine that powered Crysis 2, one of the best looking games of this generation. You’ll also be able to whip up some scenes, using the CryEngine 3 sandbox level editor.
“This SDK contains more toys than we’ve ever released before – it empowers people to create whole new games from scratch, not just mod Crytek’s own games, so we encourage all aspiring and indie developers to try it out.” said Carl Jones, Director of Global Business Development CryEngine.
Crytek’s endeavor into the world of free development kits will put the company against Epic Games, who released a free development kit for their Unreal Engine back in 2009.
As mentioned above, you’ll be entitled to free usage of the software, unless your project becomes commercial, in which case you’ll have to pay a licensing fee. That sounds fair to us.
You can download the SDK now, from the Crydev website.
