Sony’s released it’s Q2 results for the last three months, showing strong PS3 sales which confirms the hardware as the World’s best selling console for the past quarter.
The results show that PS3 sold 3.7 million units for the quarter, which is a gain of 0.2 million over the same time period last year. Taking these figures and adding them to the overall total means that PS3 sales now stand at 56 Million units sold since launch, which isn’t too far being the Xbox 360′s 57.3 million total.
Given the PS3 was behind in sales due to Microsoft having a head start, it seems that it has been gaining traction on it’s rival for some time and if current trends continue then it’s possible that by this time next year it will overtake Xbox 360′s overall sales.
On the software side, sales rose from 35.3 million units in Q2 2010 to 37.4 million this year and although this seems the PlayStation division in profit, overall Sony has reported a 27 billion yen ($346 million) loss for the latest quarter, due to the strong yen (much like most Japanese companies) and poor TV sales.
Finally, PSP sales were also up (1.7 million units from 1.5 million), while software was down (11 million to 8.1 million), PS2 sales continue to decline, now standing at 1.2 million.
