Kinect not doing so well in Japan

It seems that Kinect isn’t the answer to Microsoft lack of sales in Japan, after it was revealed that the device only sold 114,000 units in its first year on sale.

Famitsu (via Andriasang) posted up the sales of the system for each month, with only December 2010 really standing apart from the other months due to the device selling 43,200 units. Other than that Kinect seems to average around 2000 units per month.

Here’s the monthly sales breakdown:

  • November 2010: 27,800
  • December 2010: 43,200
  • January 2011: 14,800
  • February 2011: 5040
  • March 2011: 3160
  • April 2011: 2100
  • May 2011: 1910
  • June 2011: 3470
  • July 2011: 2980
  • August 2011: 2460
  • September 2011: 1900
  • October 2011: 3333
  • November 2011: 1980

In addition to units sold, Famitsu also published a list of the top selling Kinect games and again the sales do not look good. Apart from the popular Kinect Adventures which has sold 114,000 units to date, every other game hasn’t even managed to break the 25k barrier.

Here’s the list:

  1. Kinect Adventures: 114,000
  2. Forza Motorsport 4: 24,900
  3. DanceEvolution: 22,400
  4. Kinect Sports: 13,000
  5. You Shape Fitness Evolved: 12,300
  6. Dance Central: 8690
  7. Kinectimals: 5350
  8. New Brain Training 4930
  9. Sonic Free Riders: 4160
  10. Fighters Uncaged: 3470

Microsoft said last week that it’s now sold 1,519,214 million Xbox 360 consoles in Japan since launch, so it seems based on this figure that only around 10 percent of it’s fan base is interested in its motion controller.
