The U.S NPD sales result for November have been revealed and as expected sales have been dominated by both Modern Warfare 3 and, on the hardware side, the Xbox 360.
Software sales were up 15 percent for November compared to last year, creating a revenue of $1.67 billion. Modern Warfare 3 was the big winner, selling 9 million copies in the U.S alone, while number two title, Skyrim, managed to outsell EA’s well publicised Battlefield 3.
The top ten is packed with multiplatform titles, although it’s good to see Naughty Dog’s PS3 exclusive, Uncharted 3, sitting proudly in number seven spot. Just behind in number nine is another exclusive, with Wii’s The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword also performing well.
As for hardware, Xbox 360 was the top dog, with Major Nelson confirming that the console sold 1. million units in the US alone.
“This is the fourth consecutive month in which the Xbox 360 has been the top selling hardware system,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier, “the gap between 360 sales and sales of the next best selling platform was the largest we’ve seen since December 2008 when the Nintendo DS was the top selling system.”
Sony didn’t give exact figures, however it did respond stating that the Black Friday sales period for PS3 were the “best in the console’s five-year history and PS3 saw a 70% increase in hardware sales year-over-year,” adding that “The firm also said it has seen a “very strong” demand for its holiday bundles.” Based on the percentage given this seems to place PS3 on 900k units sold which would represent a 70 percent YOY gain.
Elsewhere, both the Wii (860k) and the 3DS performed strongly, with the latter in particular shifting 795k units. The DS still seems to be selling fairly well, managing to sell 350k units.
