The first details on Naughty Dog’s upcoming title The Last of Us have emerged from the latest Game Informer, giving some gameplay information and confirmation of an online mode, although details of the latter are still sketchy.
As is already known, the games plot centres around Ellie, a 14 year old orphan who lives at a boarding house in a military quarantine zone, and Joel, a man in his late 40′s, who smuggles guns and drugs to and from the quarantine zone.
Both are trying to survive a fungus outbreak which is destroying the world and the game starts with Joel agreeing to smuggle Ellie out of the safe zone for some unknown reason, but things go wrong and the military starts chasing him. He was going to abandon Ellie, but a dying friend asked him to escort her to safety, so he does. They try hiding and fail, therefore they need to flee West across the country.
Interestingly, creative director Neil Druckmann confirmed that story is self-contained, “we don’t end on a cliffhanger. The characters and the journey they go through ends with this story.” This doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be a sequel, but it does seem that this is the plan for the moment.
As well as details on the plot, Naughty Dog also confirmed to Game Informer that there would be some sort of online functionality, although didn’t go into too much detail.
“We’re going to have some sort of online component,” said director Bruce Straley. “We’re working on a bunch of ideas, but we haven’t nailed anything down. We definitely know it’s going to be awesome.”
