MCV is claiming that Microsoft has been telling partners that the Next Xbox will NOT include a disc drive.
According to the site, MCV describes the news as being given to partners under “the strictest NDA” they have ever encountered, which kind of makes you wonder how this news has leaked.
Apparently instead of offering a disc drive, the console will instead go for ‘some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage,’ although it is not known if it will be a standard or proprietary format.
Having a standard or proprietary format for storage would make sense really, since it’d provide a solution to the problems that MS currently faces with disc storage on the Xbox 360.
But how would this work? We’ll we’d imagine that it’ll be similar to the PS Vita, with games sold on card at retail, while also being released digitally for those who’d prefer their games that way.
Finally, MCV also states that a 2013 release has been confirmed for the hardware.
The website has already stated in the past the both the Next Xbox and the next PlayStation will be announced at E3 this year, although we aren’t 100 per cent convinced of this, especially in the case of the PlayStation.
Make sure you mark this as a complete rumour and take the news with a very large pinch of salt.
