It’s being reported that Big Huge Games and 38 studios are shutting down.
An anonymous reached out to Kotaku telling the site that 38 Studios just laid off its entire staff, with both the Providence and BHG studios being shuttered. In addition, the source also claims that staff have not received a paycheck since April 30th.
Meanwhile, Gamasutra got a copy of the layoff letter that was sent to all employees. It says:
The Company is experiencing an economic downturn. To avoid further losses and possibility of retrenchment, the Company has decided that a companywide lay off is absolutely necessary.
These layoffs are non-voluntary and non-disciplinary.
This is your official notice of lay off, effective today, Thursday, May 24th, 2012.
As we reported earlier, should 38 Studios become insolvent, Rhode Island would then gain the rights to the Amalur IP.
We wish all the staff effected well for the future and hope that they find new jobs as soon as possible.
