Ubisoft showed off the highly anticipated Assassin Creed III to the general public in Newcastle yesterday and luckily we managed to go along and have a look.
Six events were taking place across the UK to celebrate Independence Day in the US; these were Oxford Street, Bristol, Nottingham, Newcastle, Manchester and Glasgow. All featured a demonstration of what can be expected when the game launches in October. The previous games in the series were playable with Revelations taking up most of the stands.
The event ran through the whole day allowing for as many people as possible to see the live demonstration. Yet after the main crowd had gone home that’s when the VIP event started. Those who applied for the exclusive evening event were treated to pizza and soft drinks and some nice swag including t-shirts, posters and badges.
The live demonstration showed off three different features to the game, the first two were previously seen at E3 with Connor attacking the snow fort and fighting on the high seas. Both showed off mouth watering game play with the ability to fight from the high trees or destroy the enemy on the sea. It was the third part of the demonstration that was exclusive to the day event that adds more reason to be excited for the game.
The third part takes place in the hustle and bustle of Boston and we were shown that hay bales are not a static game mechanic anymore and can be pulled around the city by horse and cart meaning you can rain death on the move from cover. There is also a cover system which can be used for peaking around corners.
Connor can now blend easier into a crowd of people as he does not require standing in the middle of a group but can move freely amongst others while still being concealed. Another first for the series showed the main character being able to evade capture through buildings meaning no more climbing up to the roof of a house just to get to the other street.
One mechanic got my interest, those who played Brotherhood and Revelations will know that you have your very own assassin’s to command. This is a returning feature, but now instead of simply attacking the enemy, the assassins can be dressed as British redcoats allowing for you to appear as a prisoner and simply walk through checkpoints.
Before the end of the preview we saw one last impressive sight, as Connor climbed to the top of a ship’s mast, looking over the horizon and showing us just how big the city is, and indeed how much bigger Assassin Creed 3 promises to be.
What we have seen of Assassin Creed 3 means that this certainly a title to keep an eye on.
