Over 8k Guild Wars 2 accounts could be hacked *update*

Update: NCSoft have contacted us to state that the information below is "factually incorrect." According to the publisher, this number is actually slightly lower and includes both issues with email addresses and accounts being hacked.

"Over the past three days we've received approximately 8,500 new support tickets related to hacked accounts and other blocking login issues".

Original: Hackers are using stolen email addresses and passwords from other sites to try to access Guild Wars 2 accounts, ArenaNet has warned.

"If you don't want your account hacked, don't use the same email address and password for Guild Wars 2 that you've used for another game or web site," says a note by ArenaNet on the Guild Wars wiki.

"Hackers have big lists of email addresses and passwords that they've harvested from malware and from security vulnerabilities in other games and web sites, and they're systematically testing Guild Wars 2 looking for matching accounts."

Currently, ArenaNet has note of 11,074 which are suspected of being hacked.

Granted, some people may have made an unsecure password, but I don't think that many people are going to be at fault. Surely they have a responsibility to keep their players information safe as well.

@elaniel They ARE being responsible by telling their users this information. It's not ArenaNet's fault if their players use the same email/password combo for GW2 as they do for everything else. It could be the most complex password ever but if some hacker has it in heir hands because they found it somewhere else there is nothing much ArenaNet can do to stop the hacker using it to bust into a GW2 account. They've detected scripted attacks and are monitoring the accounts in question and released this info. Pretty good response I reckon.

I understand that, but it seems like NCSoft is saying it's all the players fault. To a degree it is, but plenty of other online games don't have an issue that seems to be THIS big. Granted, it could be this game is much more popular, I don't know the subscriber numbers.

Its their job to keep it secure anyways but I'm amazed that many still use the same passwords for multiple things.

This is somewhat worrying - I'd be rather annoyed if I lost my GW 2 account, which already has a significant amount of game time on it!

i believe this is what happened to me when my Xbox Live account was comprimised, Now i have hundreds of different passwords that i change on a bi-monthly basis. deffo good idea not to have matching passwords anywhere you shop..

I'm surprised, didn't expect it. It's unfortunate for Guildwars 2 gamers and NCsoft, hopefully this issue can be resolved quickly otherwise the reputation will go down greatly. It's good to know that they are people of the , hopeully the hacking will stop and security measures increased.
