Sony announces Smaller and Lighter PlayStation 3

Sony has today announced a new slimmer and lighter PlayStation 3, featuring a new design and a downsized form factor.

The new machine will become available in the UK on September 28 and October 12. It will come in two models, a 500GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD) version (launching September 28), and a newly added 12GB flash memory model (launching October 12).

Sony has completely redesigning the internal design architecture, the internal volume and weight of the new PS3 is reduced by more than half compared to the very first PS3 model with a 60GB HDD, and by 20 % and 25% respectively compared to the current PS3. By adopting a sliding disk cover, the new PS3 will keep its curved body design.

In addition, a variety of accessories will be introduced by SCE, such as a vertical stand that will allow users to stand the console upright.

Here's some pictures of the new model.

Any idea when ShopTo pre-orders will go up? Not long until the 28th is it. Also interested to know what prices retailers set.

Nice to see them adding a basic model. Being mainly a 360 user, I would have jumped at the chance of a cheaper basic model of the PS3 instead of having to buy the 160gb model

It is looking very nice! Still happy with mine, but for anyone needing a nice big HDD for that Plus content.. great buy!

If someone needs bigger HDD, he can replace it in his current ps3. It's absolutely legal, even in terms of warranty...

Any chance of some images or videos of how this new PS3's disc-tray opens? Some of the 'rumor' images had it opening on the top, with a slide panel, so wondering if that made it into this model. It definitely looks a nice design, though I think i'd prefer if the mid-section of the top had the same glossy finish as the rest of the console.

Sliding you say. Hmm...having it pop open like the PS1 would have been cooler, but a sliding door could feel pretty nice to open.

Am I the only one who thinks this doesn't look any "slimmer" than the current PS3 slim? I think it's a nice idea to release a flash version of the PS3 though. I had a PS3 and currently only have my Xbox, but I might consider buying the flash console for a couple of exclusives I've missed out on since moving to Xbox. And I hope I don't get slated for this but I think the current slim looks a bit better than this new one because I quite like the illuminated buttons on it.

It looks good but releasing another model is a bit....of a waste, no?
