SCE President thinks Playstation division will be profitable this year

Speaking to Reuters, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House 'thinks' the PlayStation division will turn a profit in the current business year ending next March.

"I think we will be profitable this year," said Andrew House, the CEO in charge of Sony's Playstation unit in an interview with Reuters during the Tokyo Game Show. "We have a growing installed base, growing connectivity of the PS3."

The PlayStation business posted an operating profit of 29 billion yen (?229m/$371m) in the year ended March 31, 2012. But wouldn't say wether they would see an improvement in that profit.

Yesterday, Sony announced a brand new cheaper, slimmed down PS3 that's coming out next week. You can preorder the console and find out more here at ShopTo.

It's possible. PS3 has been performing incredibly well globally the past while, and it still has a number of huge releases coming over the next six months.

No reason why they shouldn't keep improving, just hope they've learned some lessons for when the PS4 comes...

I hope so. As a new PS3 user I'm sure we'll have a few more pick up the console, especially with Plus and free online play. Great little system!

I am certainly enjoying my playstation experience more than ever at the moment and like everyone I hope they do well. Its also important to note that they are just about the only profitable or at least less loosing part of the entire Sony family. Very few of the Sony divisions actually turn a profit.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did post profits as Vita is now a product rather than costly development project and PS3 is well established. With the possibility that PS4 development is nearing completion too that's some fairly substantial costs off their books even if the next models development is ongoing and their catalogue of top quality first party developers are helping boost profits too. Here's hoping Sony have learnt from previous mistakes and will be better set for PS4's release closer to Xbox720

I really hope Sony start getting back on the right track. Gaming would be a worse place without them. Best for all three console suppliers to do well.
