Showcasing at the Eurogamer Expo 2012 was id Software's classic Doom 3, all ready to be re-released as part of the Doom 3: BFG Edition on console and PC's mid October.
In Doom, we find ourselves yet again fighting for our lives against Hells soldiers as they spew forth from a portal on Mars, picking up whatever weapon we can find and guiding our space marine to the very depths of Hell in Doom 3, one of the best first person shooters of its generation with only a few matching it in terms of action and scares.
With a new graphics engine giving the game a lovey high definition update it also now supports 3D, adding even more pant wetting tension to all those dark corridors. The demo gave us a chance to have a few firefights in some of the more densely populated areas, following a small sentry robot and taking on plenty of monsters, using the torch bring a little light to the pitch black hallways and giving us a chance to fire a few plasma blasts and try out the mighty chain gun.
With all the monsters and explosions the 3D graphics work really well with crisp images and a smooth frame rate and with added extra fear factor as those flying skulls now really come out of the screen and right in your face.
When released we can expect a definitive Doom collection that includes all of Doom 3's extra content plus some new missions and the classics Doom and Doom 2; though not clear what editions of these classics will be packaged, it's still going to be a truly action packed disc to own.
This one is certainly shaping up nicely and is sure to go down well with those of a certain age.
