Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski leaves Epic Games

Tonight, Cliff Bleszinski announced that he is leaving Epic Games.

CliffyB, who had been majorly involved with all Epic Games titles over the last 20 years such as 'Jazz JackRabbit' through to 'Gears of War', departs Epic Games to move on to the next chapter in his life, which is currently unknown.

Tim Sweeney, Epic Games' founder, CEO and technical director had this to say about Bleszinski:

"In 20 wonderful years with Epic, Cliff Bleszinski has grown into a true design luminary, and his contributions to the 'Unreal' and 'Gears' series have helped shape the game industry into what it is today. Cliff leaves Epic with our gratitude for his many contributions, and our wishes for continued success in the next chapter of his life! "

Cliff left this message to his colleagues at Epic, an excerpt of this was posted on Epic's website:

"I've been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop. I literally grew up in this business, as Mike likes to say. And now that I'm grown up, it's time for a much needed break."

"I will miss the projects, the playtests, the debates, and most importantly, the people. Epic only hires the best of the best, and it has been a joy working with each and every one of you on a daily basis, whether you were hired weeks ago or decades ago. I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with a variety of disciplines, from code to art to marketing and PR,  it's been one big, rewarding learning experience. I'm confident that each project that is being built, whether at Epic, Chair, PCF, or Impossible will be top notch and will please gamers and critics alike."

Good luck with your future endeavours, Cliffy!

He and some of the other big names in the gaming industry should form a super team and fight crime in the name of justice! Or just make awesome games, either way

Don't blame him, I'd want a break after that much non stop work. Actually I'd probably just retire.

I hope he takes some time and comes back with something more deserving of his name than yet another GoW game.

Really shocked by this move by Cliff. When you think Epic Games you think Cliff, well I do anyway lol. I look forward to seeing what he has planned for the future though.

Well, when you've realised your vision in Gears of War, you feel like you've done everything you can for a company you love, and you desire a new challenge, what else is there to do but call it a day? It's not disheartening for me but perhaps this will see a shift in direction for Epic. One that I feel is sorely needed as they can't keep beating the GoW cash cow for much longer.

Hope Cliffy enjoys whatever he has planned for the future, whatever that may be. He posted on twitter the other day saying he may just "wander the earth, like Cain in Kung Fu"... well, if he does, hopefully he'll come back to the gaming industry one day!
