Trials Evolution: Origin of Pain DLC Review

Just in case the last iteration of Trials Evolution was not enough punishment, RedLynx has just released a hefty DLC under the title of Origin of Pain; no prizes for what sort of challenge waits.

Origin of Pain is one of the strongest DLC packs released for Xbox Live Arcade for some time, at a wallet friendly 400 points you get an awful lot, all based around the brand new Paine Island. Just like the main game there is a large selection of tracks to try your best at, all offering bronze, silver, gold and platinum medals and lots of headaches.

With over 20 tracks on offer there is a huge variety, starting us off in a gentle carnival environment then taking us through ancient ruins, the fuselage of a recently crashed plane, an active volcano and even a child's play set. Just like its predecessors the levels design is creative and punishing but also very rewarding once you master it.

Along with the new tracks you also have a few new character customisation items plus the Gecko 520 BMX, which whilst not available for all tracks it has a few specifically made tracks for this bike in mind with some frustrating quarter pipes that refuse to let me pass without numerous restarts.

Of course with a name like Paine Island you should expect the worse, something I ignored as I flew through the first 10 tracks with relative ease, getting a little too cocky, when all of a sudden the difficulty ramps up, especially at my personal hell Ruination, a track that still has not been completed with its insane gaps to clear. Just as before, the difficulty is something to be wary of; there are a lot of tricks and skills to master to get over some of the more simple looking obstacles, thankfully the well placed checkpoints allow you to hammer away at these until you figure it out without too much replaying of previous areas.

With all of the tracks you also have Tournaments that combine groups of tracks together and a couple of new Skill Game Circus tracks, a target game where you get shot out of a cannon and a return to the classic height challenge, how high can you go?

If you have managed to unlock the required amount of medals (this DLC will help boost this if you could not get there in the main game) you will unlock the Unnatural Selection tracks, three devastatingly difficult tracks that have to be seen to be believed, with the very last one distancing itself from the rest with a 2D pencil drawn level, with the level actually being drawn by a huge pencil as you drive along.

As the last level testifies, there are still loads of original tracks out there supplied by the bustling Trials community, will loads of tracks to try out and grade, created by not only owners of the game but also more tracks by the developers RedLynx. With this DLC you of course get to try out this whole new island with all of its additional content on the track editor, allowing for even more masterpieces of pain and destruction.

Origin of Pain is a very well priced piece of DLC, if you own Trials Evolution this is well worth shelling out for, extending the gameplay and offering even more in the way of customisation and creation.

I actually found this game rather calming in a weird way. This and Super Meat Boy rarely ever got me raging. Gears of War 1 multiplayer however lost me a controller. Damned rolling shotgun twats...

definitely a great addition to the game, with some harder achievements (the wheelie achievement in particular) than the original adding HOURS extra to an already brilliant game

Wish trials was on psn :( The game is great fun, I loved playing it on xbox, even though some of those levels were damn hard. Sold my xbox a while back though :/ wish I could try out this new pack.
