Burnout will return; we might make Road Rash, says Criterion

Criterion creative director Craig Sullivan has said in a new interview that its popular racing series, Burnout, will return.

Speaking to The Guardian in response to a question about what other genres the studio would like to work on, Sullivan said the studio's focus for the moment was on driving, before dropping news that Burnout is on the way back.

"There's still a lot of stuff we want to do with driving," Sullivan said,  adding that "We will make another Burnout game at some point.

"Obviously, as we're working on NFS we're thinking of really good ideas that aren't right for this series; there are ideas that we're going to explore with Burnout. And we wouldn't be making NFS or Burnout games if we didn't think the driving genre had a long shelf life and that we could push the boundaries."

In even more exciting news (well to us anyway), Sullivan made an even more noteworthy statement.

"We might make a Road Rash game," he said "but then we might make a game without vehicles in it. I mean, we made Black, I was the lead designer; we might make a game about blowing the crap out of each other.

"But Road Rash seems like a good fit for Criterion."

Two games people have been crying out for and Criterion may make them? Yes please. We'd certainly be first in line for both these games.

A new Burnout would be nice, but not another open world one, at least not for the racing, and not another Crash, as fun as that was, it wasn't what we wanted from a new Burnout.

i agree, paradise got boring very quickly! we need another one like burnout 3 or takedown. in saying that, if they release a new road rash, the that's burnout out the window for me! especially if its anything like road rash 64.

Can't say I've ever played a Road Rash, but I've heard good things about it, and if anyone can bring it back Criterion can.

We certainly need another Burnout but it has to be like 3 or Takedown, the hours i poured into those games trying beat scores was unreal, i just couldn't get into Burnout Paradise as it didn't feel like Burnout. As for Road Rash all i got to say is GIMME GIMME!

I too am hoping the new NFS is more like Burnout. If not I can wait. Road Rash as it stands was good for its time but a bit gash now. Interesting to see what they can do with it.
