Valve hard at work on Source Engine 2

Valve figurehead Gabe Newell has confirmed that the American developer is hard at work on a sequel to their hugely popular graphics engine, Source, which has powered such games as Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and the Portal series.

During a group chat/interview with members of 4chan's /v/ board, Newell revealed that Valve were currently at work on a sequel to the Source Engine."

Newell answered, "We've been working on new engine stuff for a while, we've just been waiting for a game to roll it out with." at which point, one member of the group asked "Is it more than just an extension to Source? Like, is it an entirely new engine."

"Yeah," Newell said.

Gabe also let slip that Valve are also working on Ricochet 2.

Sounds like Valve and gearing up for next gen then. New engine and new games. I doubt that we'll see Source 2.0 on current gen, doesn't seem like the most sensible thing to do. I really can't wait to see what all these new engines that we're seeing coming out/being developed will do with the next gen of consoles.

Hopefully they are working on Half Life 3 too.

You'd like to think that they would be. Maybe they are, maybe secrets can still be kept in the gaming industry...maybe.

Isn't Ricochet 2 Half Life 3? I thought it was always the code-name for it whenever it cropped up in discussions at conventions etc.

Potentially it is as the original Ricochet was a mod for Half-life 2, unless they are going to make it a stand alone game.

Source engine definitely needs updating now, it can still run games well but it needs to catch up with newer engines such as the Unreal and CryEngine. But you can guarantee if they're making a new engine, Half-Life 3 will definitely be an early contender for being made on it.

I thought Valve were always going to update Source but a new engine probably means they need more fundamental changes to the code. Along with everyone everywhere I hope this means Half Life 3 will see the light of day in the next year or so at least!

Half-Life 3 is the obvious choice, but i wouldn't say no to a Left 4 Dead 3 &/or Portal 3, and in the case of Left 4 Dead, preferably multi platform (ie. on a Sony machine)
