Levine: No multiplayer in Bioshock Infinite

Irrational Games boss Ken Levine has confirmed that Bioshock Infinite will not include a multiplayer mode.

Speaking via his twitter account in response to questions from fans, Levine said that there would be "no multi".

We are quite pleased to hear this news and hope that this means that the sole focus on single player will provide an outstanding experience. It's our opinion that a game shouldn't need to have a multiplayer mode just for the sake of it, so we are glad some developers agree.

maybe they will release a standalone game for multiplayer in the future feels like a missed opportunity to not do it in the long run but if they did a standalone game they could add all sorts of different maps

Good. The multiplayer was needlessly shoehorned into 2. And the single player was certainly lacking too.

Yep, definitely a wise decision, Bioshock doesn't need multiplayer, number 2 proved that. Too many games have online multiplayers tacked on just because so many people demand it, even when it's not appropriate or needed.

I wouldn't say the single-player in BioShock 2 was lacking at all (I thoroughly enjoyed it) but I do think BioShock as a series doesn't need multiplayer in the same way Half-Life doesn't need it. This series stands on it's own merit and doesn't need to follow the crowd. That said, good stuff Mr Levine. You've made the right choice.

I think that this is a good move. Some games do not need multiplayer. Single player is enough. Even more, Bioshock universe is designed in such a way that multiplayer would be a forced addition. It won't be seamlessly integrated. Take Call of Duty or Gears of War as an example. The multiplayer makes sense.

I'm kind of glad about this, at least it means they can concentrate soley on the single player experience.

When they added multiplayer to Bioshock 2 it was all handled by a separate developer, so it wouldn't make any difference to the quality of the single player.

I think multiplayer could fit into this game but i am just glad that not every developer is putting it in there games.

I thought the MP in Bioshock 2 would of been real good if wasn't so damn laggy. Hopefully the sp has some length. The first Biohock was short

Sure they've said this before, which is a good thing. Focusing on the SP in a game that is so story driven. MP is not for every game, and not every game should try it!

Multiplayer gaming is too samey, no matter what game you're playing. I'm stunned by how many people crave this type of thing. "Gotta have multiplayer, gotta have multiplayer," - people are drugged-up and addicted to souless gaming! A game isn't bad just because you can't mingle with others in ridiculous arena combats - which don't actually amount to anything - and bear no resemblance to the title you're playing.

I've seen the original completed by someone - spoilers and all - and was well impressed by the overall quality of original Bioshock. Clearly how a FPS should be made. The negative press surrounding the franchise about multiplayer (or lack thereof) is unwarranted, considering how great their franchise already is based on traditional single-player gaming.

Bioshock doesn't necessarily need multiplayer, but from a publisher's point of view it is important as it extends the lifespan of the game and reduces the amount of people selling once completed and then people buying 2nd hand copies. The alternative is lots of DLC... They could always look at implementing something completely different for multiplayer rather than a deathmatch style shoot 'em up. Some sort of puzzle game or card trading?

But there are ton of FPS games released; of all of them, only a small minority would continue to play a multiplayer in a majority of the games; inevitably servers for these games are obsolete before too long as the next big thing arrives and everybody moves on. To think adding multiplayer will extend the life is wishful thinking - unless you have a mammoth customer-base (Black Ops II), a couple of weeks on and players are into something else.

Glad it doesn't have multi-player. Whilst Bioshock 2 online was quite fun and an interesting spin on the FPS genre, this will allow them to concentrate on SP and deliver a brilliant experience with no online frills.

Fantastic news. The series doesn't need it and more focus on the SP can only be a good thing.

Yay! I thought Bioshock multiplayer was the worst decision ever made! It was really bad, and totally took away from the single player experience! It reminds me of Assassins Creed multiplayer which was just so unnecessary lol. This is great news!! :D

Good news as doesn't need multiplayer so hopefully all efforts are put in to make a solid single player campaign which all games should be doing before even thinking about Multiplayer:)
