Rumours suggest 'Mini Wii' is on the way

It's being reported that Nintendo are getting set to release a redesigned Wii console next month.

Being dubbed the "Mini Wii" by?Nintendo World Report, the site claims to have received access to an internal release schedule from a major retailer stating that Wii Mini is set to launch on Friday December 7, 2012.

Apparently the compact console will come with a Wii sensor bar, Nunchuk and Wii Remote Plus.

Nintendo has refused to comment on the rumour.

We're just not sure on this one. Surely releasing a new Wii model when you are about to release the Wii U would be slightly confusing to consumers? We'll see.

Seems a bit pointless to me, surely they couldn't make it that much smaller anyway.

Seems really pointless surely there not making many new Wii games so why bother making a new design for a console when you have a new console out. Seems a total waste of money if true.

Maybe they aren't going to stop making Wii games, and have a 2 tier strategy.

What was the last nintendo made Wii game? I thought they had already given up on it. as no new games have come out for a while

Probably Skyward Sword, or was there a Kirby game lately, not sure about that. They're still making DS games though, so they may keep the Wii on too in a small capacity.

Skyward sword was released a year ago thats a long time without a hint of a game even if you look on the coming soon games in the Wii section on the site there is only 5 games doesnt look to great a future for the Wii. they have sold a lot of Wii consoles over the years I would of thought anybody who wants one would of got one by now.

Pandora's Tower was the last game of note in the UK. Or was it Mario Party 9? There's the Olypics one too.

Nintendo will not be releasing anymore first party Wii titles. They've long since left the Wii to rot in party game hell for the remainder of it's life now that sales of the thing are in sharp decline. The reason they still make DS games is because the DS is still more popular than the 3DS. Just look at the most recent figures put out showing that the 3DS is actually selling LESS than the original DS everywhere but Japan at this point.

Well, the Wii U will be compatible with all Wii games so the crossover of Wii and Wii U games can continue. Very odd, though, that Wii U games will be released specifically for the new console; all the while in the background, Wii is kept alive in the consumer base. Couldn't imagine Wii-only games getting released.

Sony had a two-tier strategy where the PS3 and PS2 were concerned and do now with the PSP and PS Vita, although I expect the latter will be killed off in about a year or so. Some people who liked the Wii but aren't so attracted by the Wii U will still want the opportunity to get down on that system and in this economy, pricing is everything. That said, I personally won't be getting the Mini Wii if the rumours are to be believed (which 9/9 times out of 10, they aren't) but it would be a pretty solid business strategy to make up for the losses where the Wii U is concerned.

Wasn't there one done recently that took out Cube Support? I'm not really sure what else they can do. Howver if it's priced at £50 it would be great for those who passed or only want for a handful of games

Yeah, there was. The Wii does have some awesome games (classics even); they won't disappear just because the Wii U is in town.

If Nintendo is really preparing Mini Wii, they are making a really bad move. The only way the Mini Wii will succeed is if it is VERY cheap. Even then, with the Wii U out, I don't think that many people will buy it.

why would they do this like everyone is saying with the wii u coming out i dont see the point, unless its very very cheap but then you might as well put the money to the new tech and get a better experience.

A good tactic by Ninty to rinse a little more cash from the Wii sales, but as long as its at the right price, it still might be worth getting for the younger members of the family.

Bad move. Better to concentrate on marketing and selling the new console as opposed to giving people a reason not to buy it.

Not just pointless but possibly very dangerous for the WiiU sales. It would be the easiest way to cannibalise your own market potential.

I think this can only help because hey will appeal to another market of people who dont like the WiiU but want something smaller than the Wii or even an xox or PS3. Weve seen the affect mini versions have had in the past and most are effective and succesfull. You o?ly have to look at the recent ipad mini to realise this. Good point though as it can be risky because consumers are put of sometimes with mor option becaue they are to affraid to make the wrong decision on buying the best thing. This is why samsung fell behind apple because they made to many different models which just discouraged buyers because of the fear of the wrong decision. Where as apple had a simple layout of memory being the only difference. However The Wii is a loved console and wont be suprised if it reaches high sales when hits the shelfs.

Wonder what features they'll strip out of this version of the Wii. They already cut the last iteration to the bone with all support for Gamecube titles and accessories removed, so what's next? Pointless move though seeing as software support is all but dead on Wii at this point.

Is the era of the Wii coming to an end? I feel that with the powers of sony and microsoft and the technological upperhand they have along with budget will mean they can and always will make better stuff? But is that always the aim? I spoke to a few mates and they prefer nintendos fun approach to all their consoles and games. For example something simple like mario kart is a worlwide known game and i can say has created much more fun than the big giants of call of duty or Halo. Keep going nintendo, we need another horse in the 2 horse race atm.
