Take Two Interactive has revealed that the Grand Theft Auto franchise has shipped a whopping 125 million untis to date.
The last time we heard a total was September 2011, however it seems since then that another 11 million units have changed hands. Breaking the figure down reveals that GTA IV has sold 25 million units alone, which is pretty impressive really.
"It's our view that if you want intellectual properties to be permanent, then you run the risk in that circumstance of having consumers fall out of love with that franchise,"?CEO Strauss Zelnick told Gamespot.
So what's the reason for the success of the GTA franchise?
"Our view is it's hard to make permanent intellectual properties if you annualize it, with the exception of sports titles. So far that's proven to be the case. IP that is annualized eventually seems to hit the wall and we don't want our IP to hit the wall."
With 125 million units shipped so far, I'd imagine that the GTA series hitting a wall is the last think Take Two would want. Somehow though, we get the feeling that GTA V will add quite a few extra numbers to the total so far.
