UK Charts, w/e Dec 3: Black Ops 2 pips Far Cry 3

Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops II lands at number one in this week's charts, outpacing the debut of Ubisofts excellent Far Cry 3.

Sales of Black Ops 2 were down 35 per cent, however given that the title debuted on Wii U this week, this helped push sales enough to keep it in top spot, at Far Cry 3's expense.

Elsewhere in this week's charts, FIFA 13 remains at number three, while Hitman and Assassin's Creed III make up the top five.

The highest Wii U-exclusive entry is the bundled Nintendo Land at number 11, while Super Mario Bros U debuts in 13th spot, followed by ZombiU in 17th place.

That's interesting to compare to the Vita's UK launch performance, where it's debut games saw several entries go straight into the top ten, and it's biggest launch exclusive, Uncharted, was straight in at number 1. Considering Nintendoland is bundled with the console and it failed to break the top ten alone is not an encouraging sign for the machine's hardware debut.

Vita was launched in....March or April right? At a time where there isn't so many big titles to go up against. Edit: It was Feb. Looking for sales figures for the month of Feb and see no Vita games at all. And a lot of posts about 20% decline in Game sales during said month.

Don't let facts get in the way of one of kevins attacks on Nintendo. You know I'm beginning to think he was touched as a child by a moustachioed plumber, and that's why he hates Nintendo.

"Looking for sales figures for the month of Feb and see no Vita games at all." That's because it launched on the last day of Feb. Uncharted was the number 1 game that week the console launched so March sales are probably a better indicator. There's info coming in now going into more detail about today's chart suggesting the Wii U has sold less than 40k consoles at launch, which if true is a lot lower than the approx. 60k the Vita did in a similar time frame and would make the Wii U the worst selling home console launch in over a decade.

Where do you get these figures from, no official sales figures for the Wii U have been released yet.

The figures are extrapolations from software sales arrived at by people who know far more about these things than I do on some forums I frequent. Not 100% accurate by any means, but definitely ballpark.

Made up then, as I thought.

Vita launched on the 22nd of Feb according to Wikipedia. So if it's games were at the top of the charts it would be noticeable in Feb's sales amounts too.

Made up, eh? Here's some confirmation with a bit of positive spin to it: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/wii-u-sells-40k-units-in-the-uk-in-its-opening-weekend/0107419 - the article claims the console is sold out, but it isn't, as GAME, Argos, Tesco and others are fully stocked with all SKUs of the console on their websites. Wii U is currently on course to have the lowest selling home console debut in UK history.

Bet you're glad it took that crown from the Vita ;)

Regardless of the Vita's position now, it had a good launch. It's launch sales were in the vicinity of the 360's UK launch. And besides, when all's said and done, the Wii U's poor launch represents a much bigger fall for Nintendo than the Vita's did for Sony. Going from top selling home console last gen to worst console debut ever is no trifling thing.

Regardless, it's still far too early to call it a failure, as those in the know know. I actually read an interesting article about it this morning and instantly thought of you.

funnily enough kevin, I was skimming some other posts and another Nintendo hater actually said that it was an impressive sales amount. Guess people really were expecting it to not sell at all XD Oh and apparently the average game conversion rate is 2:1 which means plenty of profit for the big N lol. So likely Ninty have made more of a profit from selling less units than Sony did with selling more units on the Vita

Considering the Wii U has been launched during AAA time (no doubt some of the COD and multiplatform sales were for Wii U.) it makes quite a bit of sense. In the long run I can see these titles staying where they are. Proving a solid, constant sales as opposed to the rest of the top 10 where a few weeks down the line they'll take a nosedive
PrometheusFan's avatar
Actually the individual SKU chart breakdown shows that while Black Ops 2 on 360 was number 1 and the PS3 version was number 2 the Wii U version didn't even chart at all :/

darn blops 2 yet again takes the top spot, was hoping farcry would take it as thats a brilliant game thats worthy of the top spot, cant believe hitman has started to fall now as well, lets hope next week farcry takes top spot.

Number 4 is still amazingly well. This time of year is always weird as a lot of the bigger games get bought throughout the month as christmas gifts and not so much as on launch.

I do wish the UK charts would provide figures, and differentiate between different versions of games. It would be so much fairer on exclusive titles.

They do: http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110032

No surprise, but I do like to see Far Cry 3 up there as well as Hitman Absolution.

Looks like other places are saying that Wii U sold 40,000 units in 48 hours. But this was apparently because there wasn't enough stock. Or at least that's what's been reported. Also the charts exclude e-shop sales too. http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/wii-u-sells-40k-units-in-the-uk-in-its-opening-weekend/0107419
PrometheusFan's avatar
It's been in stock just about everywhere since release. Game, Tesco, Argos... they have all the SKUs available, so there is no sell out here. And I wouldn't rely much on eShop figures being all that hot either given the digital pricing on there and lack of storage on the Wii U itself.
PrometheusFan 4 years ago
Robichoico's avatar
Depends on where you go. Most places up here are sold out of them. Some only getting up to 5 units each. I tend to find online is a lil different than in-store for some people. I know people who refuse to buy consoles on line because of the hassle if something should go wrong. Archaic but I can see their point.
Robichoico 4 years ago
PrometheusFan's avatar
Not really the point. The article claims it's a sell out launch when clearly it isn't.
PrometheusFan 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
And you are making out a few units here and there is fully stocked. You do know all they need to list it as in stock is one unit, don't you? And then they may just be listing it as in stock because they are due more units soon.

Well, if the Wii U hasn't sold out then that is good news for people who want one, surely? Why should we really care if it does or not. I'm waiting for Christmas for mine to be 'christened'. Arguing over who's game or console is selling better is pointless. ;)
