Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 Preview

Sitting, waiting. Slowly moving whilst covered in camouflage making sure I've covered every angle, every corner until the unthinkable happens. I'm spotted by the security guard sneaking into the Namco/Bandai offices. Luckily he didn't throw me out and I got to see some Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 footage! So what's it all about?

You play as Sniper Cole Anderson (no relation to Editor Joe as far as we know) who has been sent on a mission into the jungles of Sarvejo to stop a bomb cargo being transported. Of course you are playing as a Sniper, so dont get too carried away.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 puts you in a different First Person Shooter experience. Instead of blasting away at anything or anyone you see with the biggest and meanest gun you can find, it requires you to sit and think. Yes, think. With Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 , its very easy to die if you mistake it for an action game. Instead, the mechanics make you appreciate the stealth element of a game. One such example is moving through open terrain, There may be six people in your path but you can't run in because you will be killed almost instantly, instead you have to plan which enemies to kill without alerting the rest and have them bombard you while you cower in a corner. So if it's not an action game what is it? Well it's a sniper game. You will spend just as much time standing still as you will moving but you have to be smart.

So In the jungle you come to your first obstacle of progressing through the game, clearing an opening guarded by soldiers and i instantly fail miserably because i assumed it was an action game. After this happens a few times I then get into the mind set that "Its NOT an action game" forget Call Of Duty. So I think about strategy, headshot this guy on the left, then the guy on the roof, then wait for the guy on the right to patrol around the building, kill the guy by the door and wait for the other guy to come back. Area clear. And of course, the impressive bullet cam kills from the first game are still here adding that extra feel of accomplishment when you have taken the time to plan and set up your kills.

There are points in the game where you will sneak past areas of 10 people without killing anyone and times when you have to cover a friendly soldiers escape by quickly taking out an onslaught of enemies. What makes Sniper 2 interesting is this method of thinking. It's easy to forget yourself in the game there is no quick scoping or camping. But what about Multiplayer? Well, the developer was quick to explain to us how the multiplayer works, even if there did seem to be a lot of eye rolling in the room.

"Yes there is Multiplayer but dont worry, there will be no camping" We all look on with eager anticipationon his next quote."

"We know that with other FPS games, people favour the sniper and like to sit and pick off people as they walk past but if you sit around on Sniper 2, there are certain penalties to the player, alerting other players to where they are." That's that sorted then, a multiplayer experience where you hunt other players instead of waiting around in one spot for the kill.

Will Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 be a game that everyone will love? Probably not, but for all the wrong reasons. So far it looks promising but with all the other run and gun FPS games will it struggle? Will gamers want the challenge of planning their kills? This is not Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid. But like the first game in the series it is a refreshing change to a familiar genre. I hope people can appreciate that.

I'm kind of looking forward to this. Mainly to see how CryEngine 3 handles the greenery! The Crysis 1 port wasn't an accurate depiction of what it can do and I'm curious. Gameplay wise, I'm not over excited, but I'll give it a go. I thought the first was pretty average

I played the first Sniper Ghost Warrior round a friends, not expecting much, but I quite enjoyed it. So I'll be keeping tabs on the 2nd game.

I really liked the first one, but the thing that stopped me playing it was the horrendous fact that, if you were spotted, everyone in the world knew where you were, and no kind of cover helped. It was one of those things where you would be spotted half a mile away, and every man and his dog started shooting at you, and from that point on knew where you were til they killed you or vice versa. I really hope this new one has rectified that as I LOVE stealth games!
