"Kratos still has a story to tell," says Studio Santa Monica

Sony's Santa Monica studio director Shannon Studsill has admitted that the popularity of God of War means that Kratos still has a story to tell.

Speaking in an interview with ShackNews, Studsill said, "There are creative reasons and business reasons," when asked why the studio decided to work on PS3 title Ascension. "I think there was still some story to tell.

"I think for the single-player game, there were systems that we wanted to enhance. Not to diss God of War III, as that was tough to go from PS2 to PS3, but our focus for God of War III was very tools and engine-focused. And now what we're trying to do is catch up a bit in terms of systems we wanted to improve upon."

ShackNews also asked if the team would be carrying the series over to Sony's next-gen system, although Studsill replied with, "I don't know what you're talking about. The PS3 is a very powerful machine, and we definitely feel like we're taxing it, but it continuously surprises us."

Are you excited for God of War: Ascension?

I really, really cant wait to play God of War Ascension, especially getting my collectors edition. But as amazing a character Kratos is, at some point it must eventually end. Unless of course Santa Monica have even better, imaginative writers then we thought (and there already amazing as it is)

surely some story universes should be left once they have exhausted them, GOW is one that should be left to fond memorry rather than fragging it for every penny

Plot for the first one was great. After that the story went rapidly downhilll. Third was a mess. It's nice to know that because the games sell they'll continue milking it for all it's worth. I bet by Christmas 2013 we'll see the 7th title on the PSV

I have got my fingers crossed for a decent story. Or at least a reason to care why Kratos is going genocidal. The later games just felt like finding any excuse imaginable to tear things apart and story driven games like this need more than a tenuous link to the previous games. Due to the MP for this, it will be a rental. Once I've played and I know the story is worth a purchase, I will go out and buy it. Tacked on MP turns me off
