Valve confirms development of its own 'Steam Box'

Following the announcement of Xi3's Valve funded 'Piston Box' yesterday, Valve boss Gabe Newell has now confirmed that the company is currently developing its very own 'Steam Box.'

Speaking in an interview with The Verge, Newell said, "We'll come out with our own [Steam Box] and we'll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That'll be a Linux box," he said.

"If you want to install Windows you can. We're not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination."

Valve's Steam Box, which is currently going under the name of 'Bigfoot', will include "a controller that has higher precision and lower latency" than existing peripherals.

The Steam Box itself will have a web browser, to allow users to do "absolutely" anything they could with any other Internet-connected PC's.

More details on the device are expected soon.

This could be a box to really challenge the dominance of consoles for a space under the TV, providing the price is right.

If this is going to catch on they really need to simplify and standardize things for the average console user, but they seem to be going in the opposite direction.
