It's strange how the worlds biggest console (xbox360), struggles to sell in the homeland of video games.
Anonymous user's avatar
Odd that you'd think that considering it's the worst selling console world-wide now.

Uh... well... technically that would be either the Wii U or Vita, but yeah, the 360 is far from the "biggest console in the world". Biggest console in the US maybe, but not the world.

Nice of you to think of me, but there's not a lot to say here that doesn't already speak for itself. The Wii U is a flop in the one territory that it was considered a safe bet to dominate the coming generation and there is nothing on it's release schedule that has a chance of turning that around. Everyone was expecting a post holiday hardware drop across the board, but even then, Wii U's "worst case scenario" numbers were being put at around the 40k mark... and it's actually managed half that. If US numbers for January are down as well, then that's the Wii U at disaster levels in every major territory. Hate me or call me a troll all you like, but you're really just shooting the messenger.

Confirmed: Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover, Rayman Legends, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Scribblenauts Unlimited & Aliens Colonial Marines. TBA: Smash Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Mario, Paper Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Star Fox. I agree no system sellers there

To be clear, I'm speaking purely in terms of Japanese sales here, but Monster Hunter was actually available for Wii U at launch in Japan, as was Scribblenauts I believe. Neither helped. Aliens is available on other consoles and Lego? Pikmin? Rayman? Nothing about past sales for these series suggest they're even going to be successful, let alone successful enough to sell consoles, especially in Japan. And really... when you have to list games that don't exist, shouldn't that tell you something? And out of those, the only ones that would actually matter to the console's prospects are Smash Bros, Zelda and a full 3D Mario title. But None of those are going to come out this year, and by that point, the damage could well be beyond repair for the Wii U.

That is what the TBA mean Kevin as 'To Be Announced' & Nintendo have always been guilty of releasing there consoles a bit too early. Also haven't gearbox come out and said that for the best Aliens: Colonial Marines experience to pick up the Wii U version

I wouldn't put too much stock in what Gearbox say considering they're not developing the Wii U version. Not saying it COULDN'T be the better version, but historically games in development being farmed out to external devs rarely end up being great.

True but I know of 2 games that have been better than the internally developed one. (Force Unleashed Wii) I just can't recall the other one

Also, I just read that the Wii U version of Aliens isn't coming out at the same time as the other versions. In fact, it doesn't even have a release date yet.

I thought that was TC. Craig Charles still doing the voice work? I haven't watched it in ages. I prefer Ninja Warrior, and the odd bit of Banzuke

Nintendo hold the majority of the Japanese software market it seems, but all signs are pointing to a major crisis for their home console division, because even though Wii U is doing worse than most expected (And though some won't believe it, I take no pleasure in being right on that score), the drop off in Wii numbers as well is genuinely shocking. PS3 outsold combined numbers for both consoles... and to think it even outselling the Wii alone was considered impossible only a couple of years ago.

Why does any of this matter....? Just enjoy your games people... *sigh*
PrometheusFan's avatar
Well, when console's sell bad they stop getting games. Wii U is selling bad... so yeah, it might matter a little.

3DS still continues to decimate everything else. And 9/10 of the games in the top 10 were on Nintendo platforms. Keep in mind that the next major release for the Wii U in Japan is Pikmin. (I think there may be an Inazuma 11 game soon too?) I can see Nintendo comfortably coasting until then with the 3DS. PS3 sales will go up in March too with the new Dynasty Warriors and One Piece games too.
PrometheusFan's avatar
Pikmin is indeed the sole game coming for Wii U that's of any relevance to the Japanese market, but will it be enough to sell consoles? Considering past Pikmin games on Gamecube and Wii weren't big sellers I doubt it and to be honest, even if the 3DS is doing well, do you really think Nintendo are content to just sit and watch their home console division crash and burn?

I think that is solely down to Monster Hunter since that was what kept the PSP alive in japan when it first came out
