Rumour: Next Xbox is called 'Xbox' says insider

Another day, another NextXbox rumour. So what is it this time?

Well according to a Pocket Lint source, it'll simply be called 'Xbox' - maybe someone should tell them that name's be used already. Sometimes you have to wonder where websites get these sources from? One of our sources said it'd be called the 'Big X,' which is probably just as likely (p.s I'm that source and I made it up).

Anyway, the reasoning behind this is apparently to shadow Apple's style of branding i.e iPad, iPhone, iMac, therefore we could see branding from MS, such as Xbox, X-Surface (a rumoured new gaming tablet) etc.

A new gaming tablet you say? Well yes and apparently it doesn't run either Windows 8 or RT but a new OS which allows it to work as a standalone portable console. Now this we don't really believe for a second. Why would MS abandon it's flagship Windows 8 product, at the very least you would have thought there would be some compatibility. This seems to go against everything else MS is doing at the moment with its surface tablets and phones. Anyway, what do we know, the source is the expert on this matter and goes on to claim that the tablet is able to connect to the new Xbox and access media on the hard drive (which at least seems feasible). Here's the interesting part though, the source claims it will not have apps of its own and it will not have its own Windows-style OS.

Finally the X-Surface has apparently been shown internally running Unreal Engine 3 demos at a solid 60 FPS. It will also use a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol that allows it to tether to Xbox 360 controllers and future control devices.

So what did the source have to say about the Xbox itself? Well for one it includes a 8-core CPU with each running at 1.9GHz. He also claims the 'Xbox' will house an OS that looks similar to Windows 8 in some ways, but says that it's not a full version of Windows 8.

The controller meanwhile will remain unchanged.

While some of the above could be true, we are personally getting a bit tired of all the guess work. Some does seem very far fetched. We will continue to report the rumours though, after all it's a lot of fun and helps build up all the excitement we are feeling about the next gen.

If you are a 'source' and want to tell us something about the next consoles then feel free to contact us. No cowboys please.

i hope they dont change the pad design.. my hand when relaxed is shaped to a 360 pad lol! im not even kidding... is that some random internet pic or is that another rumour as to what it looks like

Just calling it "Xbox" would create too much brand confusion among the uninformed casuals, a factor which is often cited as one of the main reasons for the Wii U being such a flop. I hope that isn't true about the controller being unchanged though... that design NEEDS a new d-pad, proper shoulder buttons and rechargable batteries built in as standard (Without the need to buy a seperate charge cable).

Ah, the IPad school of naming! Everything will jsut be called xbox from now on with NO ONE knowing what the difference is between the lot of them!

Very happy that they are keeping the controller''s the same. Been using it for 7ish years so wouldn't want to have to adapt to a new one. Like the name "The Big X" aswell lol.

Yep, just common sense to leave the controller alone, it's pretty much perfect as it is. As for the tablet, not too far fetched, there's been rumours of some sort of mobile Xbox for years, and this could actually be it.
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
They need to change the D-Pad on it. One of the most frustrating things ever that.

its fine the way it is if you mainly use an xbox

I had an XBOX and it definantely wasn't fine. Take FIFA for an example, the stick wasn't quick enough to move down the player list, so you'd use the d-pad to try and skip down quicker but it would hit the right as well as down and would skip you down a mass of players. They could do with improving either the sensitivity of it or the design of it.

If they split the d-pad up PlayStation style the Xbox controller would be perfect. Razer have actually done that with their Sabertooth controller for Xbox but it's £69.99 and that's just a bit much for a controller.

Also the shoulder buttons need more resistance and it might be an idea to lose the big AA battery pack on the back as well, seeing as this is 2013 and not 1993.

Controllers didn't have batteries in 1993, they had wires.

I was thinking more in terms of a time period when double As were a widely used component of home electronics... but nevermind...

They still are, I've yet to see a rechargable remote control, or digital camera for that matter.

Apart from the d-pad and non-standard rechargeable battery, the controller doesn't need a redesign, lets hope they keep the same shape. Think Sony are making a mistake redesigning their controller for PS4. Anyone remember the original PS3 controller design? Boomerang!
MrHighway's avatar
I agree, the only real change is the battery, having to buy Double AAs constantly is boring as I never got round to buying a rechargeable pack. plus the control itself would much sleeker as a one piece instead of a removable pack. I'd totally forgotten about that boomerang, that would have been such a fail if they'd kept it :')

I read elsewhere that the next Xbox will be the same as Xbox 360 but be a Tablet. The fact it connects to the next xbox is different. Although I have also read that it will be new with new hardware too. Maybe they plan on using the tablet like a Wii U controller? I hope that it is going to be a Xbox 360 but as a tablet, as that is where most of the sales seem to be and why Disney is concentrating more on portable devices than consoles. If this happens then Disney should be able to do both, as it will still play on Xbox 360s. I will also be able to play Xbox 360 anywhere. I just fear that if any new console is created with more power it will not succeed as portable gaming devices take the lead, as developers seem to be starting to ignore consoles. If there is a new console, then it must be able to play old Xbox 360 games, play preowned games, keep Xbox 360 achievments on profile. If not, I will still get it eventually but not at launch, although that did not help with Wii U as the new games I did not feel was worth paying £400 for a new console just yet, as the only game I had a slight interest in was Zombi U, the rest I already had on Xbox 360, so for one game £400 was a bit much.
Dead's avatar
The Wii U doesn't cost £400 ;)

superniceguy's avatar
It depends on the bundle you want, but do a search for Zombi U on this site, and you get prices from £375 to £425
superniceguy 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
Don't buy a bundle then, you don't need the pro controller for it really, the console and game would be under £340, well under £300 if you get the 8GB model.
Dead 4 years ago
superniceguy's avatar
If I'm going to get a Wii U it will be the 32GB version. Zombi U is best game to get for it currently, but it is not worth it. If they released a Wii version I probably would have got it on that. May as well wait for more games to be released and / or the prices lowers.

Give it until Autumn Tony, I can guarantee you'll see big price cuts on Wii U hardware by then.

The troll must work in Nintendo's marketing department to be making such guarantees.

I think just calling Xbox as a brand reboot of sorts is smart as people in conversation will call it that anyway. I think any sub-names or numbers would just look silly as Xbox 720 is a stupid name, Xbox Infinity which I saw rumored months back sounds like a gaming broadband package.. Just plain Xbox works.

Interesting, but at the same time not interesting. I hope they keep the controller the same, but if they do change it it won't deter it'll only take a couple of weeks to readjust.

Pretty inuninspired name choice in fairness, I can see their process but I know lot of people who rip the hell out of Apple products because of the whole "I....." thing..... The good news is we'll know some concrete info in just a matter of months!

i thought they were calling it xbox 720? i think they should keep the pad the same but maybe have a built in rechargable battery and maybe have a dock built into the xbox itself ? or is that just a silly idea haha i dont know

That's what the public jumped on when talking about the next gen Xbox though it was never officially what it was going to be called.

And, shockingly, the next Playstation will more than likely be called... Playstation.

But it'll have a '4' on the end, so people will know it's a new product.

Sony are apparently dropping the numbered approach. I remember reading that Kaz Hirai likened it to movie franchises where numbers tend to only work in a trilogy amd beyond that it starts to look stupid.

Did he say that before both the Vita and Wii U got royally shat on at retail with a product perception problem often cited as one of the primary reasons for this happening by any chance? If they were considering NOT calling it PS4 before, I daresay they'll be rethinking that before it releases. It's pretty much the only new console that's got a shot at getting the message across to consumers through it's name alone... Sony would be fools to waste that brand advantage.

LOL! Turns out the "source" for this story is a hoaxer who made the entire thing up to see if anyone would believe it. Games journalism just owned itself once again :D

It did say 'rumour' and not 'guaranteed fact'. It starts discussion. I think the guys making up these rumours are more of a facepalm than any gaming site.

I like it just being called 'Xbox'. The old Xbox is so far in the past that I don't personally think there would be any confusion and, to be honest, I don't like it being called the Xbox 720!
