Nintendo Direct outlines future Wii U services and games

Satoru Iwata has outlined the future of Wii U on the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast, outlining new services and games for Nintendo's flagship console.

First up Nintendo revealed that it'll be releasing two system updates for the system. One in Spring and one in Summer. Allowing for brand new features, although these where not detailed.

In addition, Nintendo announced that it will release the Virtual Content after the Spring, although it will not include the full line-up at that time. Instead it'll include a selection of NES and SNES titles and will allow you to save a back up of your progress. Gameboy Advanced titles will also be added at a later date.

NES and SNES games will be priced the same as the Wii version. If you previously purchased on Wii then you'll get games at a reduced price automatically.

In addition to the above, Nintendo has announced that a trail campaign will also be introduced, allowing gamers to get hold of a NES/SNES game for just 30 pence. The games will return to normal price when the campaign is over. If you own the Wii version you'll be given this price even when the campaign finishes.

The first game available will be?Balloon Fight, which you can download right now for 30 pence.

As for other features, Nintendo has revealed that user communities and more than one official communities per title and filtering function are coming to MiiVerse. You'll also be able to browse MiiVerse from Smartphones in the future too.?

A European specific announcement was also made for Wii U TV, with Iwata announcing that Nintendo is working hard on this and they'll have news soon.

Games

One of the most important parts of any console is obviously Wii U and therefore a large part of Wii U Direct talked about software.

Titles on the way include LEGO City (March 28), Pikimin 3 and Wonderful 101, the latter of which had some wonderful looking new footage. Bayonetta 2 was also mentioned. There was no specific details although Iwata did show a video from Platinum Games in which they specifics about the game. We'll post that for you when we get hold of it.

Finally Iwata also mentioned that Smash Bros news will be coming at E3.

News on other games also on the way which we'd regard as big new for Wii U include a new 3D Mario game and a new Mario Kart game. Hardly surprising really given they have?appeared?on every other Nintendo console but still exciting. Expect more on these and a new party game at this year's E3.

Something which pleased us most was the announcement of two new games, Yoshi's Epic Yarn and?Shin Megami Tensei meets Fire Emblem. Yes Nintendo are doing something new, which is obviously quite brilliant.

One last big of news was that we'll soon hear more on the new Zelda game which is in development for Wii U, but if that's not enough then Zelda Wind waker will be released in HD in the meantime.

Overall a very good move by nintendo, Did not reveal too much so E3 will still be great, and made alot of people happy.

I'm looking forward to The Wind Waker HD I just hope that they will try to put at least some of the cut content in. Wonderful 101 looks absolutely beautiful & the water slide scene at the end made me chuckle. Monolith's new game looks amazing I was completely blown away & finally my mind was blown when I saw Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. :D

It's a good move overall by Nintendo. Keeping people excited about their console, releasing information that will intice anyone before the PS4/XBOX gets announced, and with still information in their pouch to release at E3 so they don't fall behind if the PS4/XBOX is on main show.

Seemed like a lot of announcements that games were going to be announced at E3... games people expected to be announced on this broadcast. And charging people more money for Virtual Console games they already own just to play them on Wii U? Downloadable GBA games on Wii U but not 3DS? God... this sounds pretty dire. Only good thing was Monolith's new game, and that's so far away from release it doesn't even have a name yet. Did anything shown even have a release date? Are they even out this year?

I think the charge is to supplement the HD visuals maybe? You paid for an SD version of a game on Wii, I'm assuming the Wii U virtual console games will be HD.

A few things. First:You can still play your Virtual Console games you have imported from your Wii but to do it you have to go to the Wii Channel so if you don't want to spend the 99p to not have to go into the Wii Channel or play them on the Wii U gamepad you don't have too. Second:Downloadable GBA games are already on the 3DS I think they are just making them available for people that don't own or use a 3DS. Third:I think its pretty safe to say that Monolith's name game is a Xeno game also Wonderful 101 was shown and has got a release date for this year

Downloadable GBA games aren't on the 3DS. There were a bunch of badly emulated ones given to ambassador program 3DS owners, but they've never been officially added to the eShop. And charging people to use games they've already bought on a different console is total BS no matter how "small" an amount it is. Sony never charged anyone for redownloading PS1 titles across PS3/PSP/Vita, and the Vita has a bunch of new features in it's PS1 emulation on top of that. Nintendo are taking the proverbial on this one, no two ways about it.

Nintendo aren't charging to redownload them. You can just port them over. They are charging for the extra features. If you want to be really picky about things one could point out how the PSV is the only console in recent history without any sort of previous console playback. If I want to play my PSP games on the PSV then I gotta pay a premium price (most more than I paid for said PSP games in the first place.) so I can play them.

Backwards compatability is completely irrelevant to this discussion.

You were the one complaining about having to pay extra for the option of playing your catalogue on your new console. Despite ignoring the fact that if you just transfer everything it's free. I'm also bringing up the fact that I have to pay extra to play my catalogue on the PSV despite every other console having this feature built in.

Nice, Wonderful 101 looks fantastic, very Viewtiful Joe like in the art style, new Yoshi looks promising too. I think Mario Kart and Smash Bros being playable at E3 could mean a Christmas launch for one of them at least. Happy about the Wind Waker remake too, it's my favourite Zelda, and I will happily buy it again. Miiverse improvements and the 30p NES games are good too, not to bothered about much else, but others will be, and it's sure to get people interested.

I love Nintendo Directs, always exciting. Let's hope they have a 3DS one as good to match. I'd be happy if they just rolled out the Nintendo Accounts and Miiverse to them

Yep, Smash Bros and Mario Kart will be playable at E3, meaning there's a good chance that we will get at last one of them for Christmas.

So the 30p titles have been announced. January: Balloon Flight, Feb: F-Zero, March: Punch Out! Featuring Mr. Dream. April: Kirby's Adventure. May: Super Metroid, June: Yoshi, July: Donkey Kong. can't argue with 30p per game at all really. Even if I already own most of these in another form.

Super Metroid was the best game on the SNES. Period.
