Platinum Games expresses interest in Darksiders *update*

Platinum Games boss, Atsushi Inaba, expressed interest in buying Darksiders via twitter, after the IP and it's creator Vigil Games failed to sell during the breaking up of THQ.

Hi tweet was in Japanese, but Polygon has provided the translation: "Oh man in THQ's big sale it looks like nobody's bought Darksiders...I'd love to buy that (if it was cheap)."

Who knows if he was actually serious, but we'd love to know what a Platinum Games version of Darksiders would look like. In collaboration with the soon to be defunct Vigil Games, we reckon it could have been special indeed.

Who knows, maybe something will happen someday, we sure hope so.

*Update*

Lead designer and our friend at Vigil Games, Haydn Dalton, tweeted that it was looking possible at one point that Darksiders 3 would be a thing.

"There was a shimmer on a slither of hope, that at one point, there'd be a Darksiders 3," he tweeted. "Four-player co-op: it rode off into the sunset today."

However as per our story above, JP Kellams, talent spotter/translator/writer for Platinum Games, responded to Haydn Dalton's post with this tweet: "@haydndalton hey man. If anyone is interested in working with/at Platinum let me know how to get ahold of you via DM."

Could there really be hope for Darksiders? We'd love to play four player co-op, that'd be incredible. Best not get our hopes up too much.

Now THAT is a match made in heaven! I wasn't the biggest fan of DS2, but the combat style in both, is right up the Platinum Games' alley. Just imagine what the guys that made the combat for Vanquish, Bayonetta and Revengeance could do with Darksiders! I'm drooling just at the thought of it!

we are drooling together my friend... hope this goes through... im so happy with this news when i sin that vigil might not survive i was gutted at the thought of not having another darksiders on my shelf... platinum games will make it a better game even though it was brilliant anyway

I would be ok with Platinum Games buying Virgil/DarkSiders Franchise, but don't let them turn the Difficulty, since Bayonetta did show how bad they was ad it

To be fair, Darksiders 3 wasn't time for 4 player co-op I don't think. I was hoping that they'd do a game for each of the 4 horsemen,k introduce each one, then the 5th is when they'd all be back together. It would mean the series wouldn't get stale. I'd be happy with a colab that seems to be possible.
Dead's avatar
That's stretching things out a bit too far really, they probably realized the series didn't have the legs to go another three games. Plus Pestilence and Famine just wouldn't make great main characters.

DynamiteWhyte's avatar
After the sales of Darksiders 2, you're right, but they thought it was a big series before so may have had it in mind. With Famine/Pestilence, they're going to need some character development if they're to be in a D3.
DynamiteWhyte 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
Even with character development they wouldn't make good heroes, how would they be represented, skin and bones and crawling with diseases?

famine and pestilence are the official Four i believe.... Darksiders four horsemen are War, Death, Fury, Strife
Pyroloveridge 4 years ago
ghengiskhan45th's avatar
Yes the other 2 horsemen are Fury and Strife. Fury has a whip and could have similar gameplay mechanics to that of Catwoman in Batman: AC. Strife's weapon of choice is the pistol and if the Darksiders franchise were to be picked up by platinum games could be akin to Bayonetta. If they decided to do a game about Fury AND Strife and bring in 2 player co-op, the DS4 were to have the 4 player co-op, that would be a sensible transition in my opinion
ghengiskhan45th 4 years ago
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
See that would be a sensible transition. Plus the 4 would handily fit in with '4 player co-op'. It would mean they have a story to fall on, and everyone wouldn't be shoved on to two characters. I mean, who'd want to go Strife if they had the chance to go War?
DynamiteWhyte 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
Meh, Fury and Strife, never heard of them.
Dead 4 years ago
ghengiskhan45th's avatar
That's the problem, unless you have read deep into the story and followed the lore outside of the games, most people know little to nothing about the other two horsemen. This is why Darksiders NEEDS to be picked up!
ghengiskhan45th 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
Or they should have gone with the proper four and not made up two of their own.
Dead 4 years ago
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
There is no 'proper 4' seeing as Pestilence is in one variation, where as Conquest is in the other. So they've made a mix for Strife. And Famine has a set of scales as a weapon, so needed replaced.

In literal terms, the only horsemen in the texts that is given a specific name, is Death "...before me was a pale horse and it's rider was named Death" All other names for the horsemen are essentially different translations of the texts. With Vigil being very careful not to actually tell us the sourse of their names etc. The same way they don't mention God and the Devil, instead going with Creator and Destroyer. Giving them creative license over what they do with the story. Just my 2 cents worth.

darksiders 3 would be immense.. but i would struggle to get friends for the co op as im the only darksiders 1 and 2 player on my friends list... until i added people of shopto... so many people lack taste in games! :P

The idea of four player co-op does sound kind of intriguing if done right. It is left in very capable hands, so only time will tell...
troublemaker's avatar
Only if the AI for the other three players is done properly so the people that play at random times like myself aren't hobbled by poor programming when our mates aint on! They do that, as much as I didn't particularly enjoy DS2, DS3 would become a must buy!

Company that makes games that don't sell expresses interest in developer that makes games that don't sell. Can't be much fun working in Platinum's accounting department I'd imagine.

You know platinum are making MGR:Revengeance right? A game that's gonna sell masses based on nothing more but the name.

Yeah... I wasn't really trying to be serious there, but Platinum's own games have done kind of rubbish at retail. Metal Gear will sell because it's Metal Gear, you're right... but who do you think will be seeing the cash from that, Platinum or Konami?

The thing is Platinum aren't interested in Vigil it doesn't seem like any publisher is which is what is delaying the Darksiders IP sale as no one wants to buy the IP that guarantee's Vigil no way of finding a buyer. So if Platinum don't mind being the bad guy for a while then this deal will cost them about $1 million and they'd have the game. Darksiders would go on to make more than that in sales making it good for their accounting department.

Platinum have already been paid! haha! The interesting one for me, is what they do with Bayonetta 2. I think their style of action and combat in games could compliment and even improve the Darksiders name. Interesting times ahead

I must be the only one that doesn't really like platinum games, they all feel so gimmicky and one dimensional.
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
I'm not on the bandwagon like some on here as I wasn't a huge fan of Bayonetta. Think most'll just be wanting them bigged up due to them making Nintendo titles in Bayonetta 2/Wonderful 101. But Vanquish is a great unique game. No great storyline, but it was great gameplay.

Holy cow, that would be awesome! A Darksiders game by Platinum would be WAY more fun. The art of Darksiders was really cool, but the actually gameplay just wasn't that exciting. I'm sure it would reel in a lot more sales.

It's a shame that their vision of the 4 player co-op will never see the light of day. Well, there may be another Darksiders game and maybe it will have co-op but there's no way to know what would have happened if Vigil kept going.

Please describe the nature of the abuse:
