Rumour: PS4 will launch in 2013 in Japan, uses Gakai Tech

Another day, another next-gen rumour, this time courtesy of the newspapers of Japan. One of these rumour stories has to be right eventually, don't you think?

Anyway, this latest rumour circulates around the?date and price details. According to Gematsu's translation, the console is expected to cost more than 40,000 YEN, which equates to 427 dollars or around 300 GBP. If true then this suggests the PS4 might be cheaper than the PS3 was a launch, although this is of course purely speculative.

Perhaps more interestingly is that the report also mentions that Sony is scurrying to meet expected demand in the US and Japan, with no mention of Europe at all. Could we be left behind again for a few months and would this give Microsoft a large head start once again?

In related new, a Nikkei report also translated by Gematsu, says that Sony will use the newly acquired Gaikai to power demos and trials as well as other media content. This would make downloading a none issue. Although it seems that Sony will not use the service for full games to begin with. We are still convinced that Gaikai will at one point allow users to tap into Sony's extensive back catalogue, although perhaps that's for the future.

Nikkei also claims that the PS4 will feature expanded network functions, including a social feature in which users can share opinions. Finally, the site also agrees that the console is on course for this year, at least in some territories.

Sony is hosting a PlayStation event on February 20 at which many people expect the PS4 to be revealed. Hopefully then we will find out if at least some of these rumours are true.

I think it's more likely they will launch in Japan and Europe first as these are their strongest markets. The US as a whole is more fond of the xbox 360.

I can see Europe being left behind till 2014 at the earliest. Which is bad news really. However, I can see Gaikai being used for demos, which would be a great idea in the whole. It would mean your hard-drive wouldn't be clogged up in the coming years.

300 GBP? But the PS3 is still 250 GBP :D (well shop prices) I can't see it being that cheap in the UK. Under 400 Pounds i bet in the UK (because we always get ripped off in the UK :-/ But saying that thank god for sites like this & Amazon where you can get stuff for much cheaper online ;)

That is not bad £300 for a new machine. We need to see the announcement on the 20th before jumping to anything

I doubt we'll get a price on the 20th. They won't want to show their cards too early to Microsoft. They'll probably just show the console/pad if that, and some game footage.

Even if the Japanese price is right we won't get a price based on the exchange rate, we never do, I'd expect it to be something from 10-20% more expensive, if not more. It'll probably be region free though, so you can always import.

was not expecting this price although this is just a rumour at the moment , its a good price considering the price of the super slim at the moment ,although history teaches us that it may be more like 400-450 , maybe because its linked to this stop preowned hope they are not that stupid though

I don't see any of the new consoles being cheaper than previous models at launch; that's not how capitalism works. They'll mark-up wherever possible to dupe/encourage gamers to buy into something 'new and improved' - making you feel your perfectly good PS3 and Xbox 360 seem inferior, when in reality, the improvements will be negligible.

have to agree if you want the next big exculsive on the next gen they know people will pay , hope they sort out reliabity issues aswell like rrod and ylod on ps3

As gamers, we do chase after the titles, not really after the machines themselves. So yeah, if a huge title is at launch, many will take the first step.

Oh and with PS2 games too. And if they say it cant be done because of some chip, talk to the hand as my 6 year old laptop can do it thanks to freeroms.com emulators and that doesn't have the special chip

I will just in case buy a couple of PS3's before they go out of circulation as new. That way my PS3 days will be long past 2020 I hope!

Not getting it before US is a good thing, because dev will get longer to learn the System and if there is a good game in US, just import

I'm sure the price for PS4 will be similar to PS3 at launch, or maybe a bit cheaper, I don't see them selling their new console for 300 GBP, maybe £350-£400. Hopefuly they will not make the same mistake as they did the PS3, if it will be sold for £300, then I guess it is a fair price for a newly launched console, keeping in mind that it will function perfectly with no techincal difficulties. I will propably wait a bit, to make sure that new console runs smoothly, don't want to waste money and be able to use it, and go through the process of contacting and waiting.
