Rayman Legends was finished on Wii U, delay only to allow for multiplatform release, say Ubisoft

Ubisoft has confirmed that the Wii U version of Rayman Legends is finished and that the game has only been delayed to allow for a multiplatform release.

"There are no issues with the game development. All of the information was in the press release, the only reason for the delay is to release on multiple platforms, Ubisoft representative Sarah Irvin said in a statement to the press.

"We usually release all of our platforms simultaneously (aside from PC). We've made special exception sometimes in the past but it's definitely just on a case by case basis and not our standard practice. In this case, Ubisoft recently decided they wanted to release the game on multiple platforms so the decision was made to launch them all at the same time rather than separately.

"I know it's not an elaborate, convincing answer, but it's the simple truth."

In related news, one of the development team has also posted his opinion on this news, the poster is from a Spanish forum, but unverified, however he sounds pretty genuine to us.

"This is not a decision taken by the development team," says the studio member, translated via Neogaf, "this comes from really really high up, so please don't pick on the game.

"If you're pissed, imagine how we feel.

"Think on the situation, we've been making overtime with this game practically since May preparing E3, and then almost a demo per month (Gamescon, Wii U presentation, shops, eShop, etc.) and at the same time trying to actually finish the game.

"We had a first delay because it was obvious we couldn't finish on time but we gave it all to be there on February. What face do you think we had when the week we had to close the game we're being told it's not going to be released? I couldn't believe it."

So there we go. What a mess eh?

The fact that they've let an employee come out and blame the higher ups isn't a great sign.

@dynamite They've not LET an employee do this. Neogaf is a favourite of people, due to the anomynimity that it offers. This dev, can say whatever he wants, with no reprocussions as no-one will actually know WHO is saying it. Unless Neogaf themselves release IPs etc.......

Anyway, I do agree its a bit of a poor decision, and Im not sure if I believe it. If the Wii version was finished, release it. They could release the 360/Ps3 version in a month/2/3/4/5 etc, and it'd still sell.

No point holding the Wii-U version up.

I can't help but see this as a bad decision. I was willing to splash out £40 (or £35 from ShopTo) to have a new game on my Wii U, plus it's one of the best demos I have ever played, but in September there'll be much more on the horizon, new consoles (well, at least one) in the coming months and I don't see it maintaining a price near its RRP for an extended time (as it could have on Wii U as an exclusive) - much the same happened to Rayman Oranges. Rayman Lemons will sadly have to wait even longer I fear, perhaps now a bargain purchase in 2014. Bad call.

Just realized, if it's Ubisoft policy to release multiplatform games simultaneously, why weren't the 360 and PS3 versions of AC3 delayed to launch with the Wii U version?
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
It wasn't a console then.
DynamiteWhyte 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
Yes it was, everyone knew about it and it's launch was imminent. It's just a bullsh*t excuse.
Dead 4 years ago
PrometheusFan's avatar
Where did they offer that as an "excuse" exactly? And it's not realistic to expect Ubisoft to delay their biggest game of 2012 to suit Nintendo's schedule when that was the version that was sure to make them the least money.

i do not know why games companys do this if its finished then stick it in the shops already , it seems they might not have faith in how this will sell
Dead's avatar
Then why do something to damage its sales, it was a dead cert for a minimum of one million Wii U sales, it'll be lucky to sell a million across all platforms now.

There really is only one reason for this, and that's a big screw you to Nintendo.

Rayman Legends will be coming to the PS3 after all? Oh my GOD. This news has made my day, Origins was simply BRILLIANT. If you like platformers, then you really should treat yourself to a copy.

nice, heard good things about this so it maybe a buy for me, bayonetta 2 now and i'll be fine.
Dead's avatar
That will definitely not be going multiplatform as Nintendo are funding it.

It'll all depend on how much control Sega will retain over the IP once the game is done. They do still own it, so...

Platinum Games tweeted this: “We’re a development company…Nintendo gives us money, we make Bayonetta 2 and W101, and they sell it…So if Nintendo says ‘We’re putting Bayonetta 2 on PS360? it’ll come out on those platforms…So ask Nintendo about it…” and since kevin likes his sources: https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/299774818381877249

It's not often I listen to gutter press like IGN, but one of their writers said not to blame Ubisoft for this, but to blame Nintendo for failing to create a console that's an attractive business proposition for third parties. That's more or less been what I've been saying about the Wii U for a while now. Ubisoft were never going to make money off of this game as a Wii U exclusive... hell, whether they make money off of it NOW is still doubtful seeing as it's only on 3 platforms still. Rayman Origins released on EVERY platform Ubisoft could port it to and it still bombed at retail (At least initially)... with the Wii version selling particularly poorly. They never should have announced Legends as a Wii U exclusive in the first place. If it had been multiplatform from the start it would be coming out a lot sooner and the sting they'll feel from it would probably have been lessened.

I don't have a problem at ALL about it not being an exclusive at all. I do however have a problem with them needlessly pushing it back for no real reason at all. Oh well. They lost a sale from me anyways. Good luck going up against GTA ubisoft.

Some people are really playing this down as the disaster for Ubisoft that it is. Fact is most Wii U owners were going to buy this, mainly because there isn't much out yet, but now they've lost a large proportion of those sales, and not only that but they've lost a lot of future sales across all platforms, as a lot of Wii U owners also own other consoles, and they won't easily forget getting screwed over like this. Come September Rayman Legends will sell even less than Origins did, most Wii U owners won't want to know because of this and most 360 and PS3 owners will be too busy with GTAV. It'll pick up some sales when it hits the bargain bin, just like Origins did, but overall it will flop, and it's all because of a bad decision by Ubisoft that they have justified with a poor excuse. You may think I am exaggerating, but a look at Miiverse or the Ubisoft Facebook pages shows the strength of feeling over this, and the scale of it, Ubisoft really have shot themselves in the foot this time.

EA treat gamers like garbage, why is it any different because Ubisoft delayed a game release? Does anyone stop buying EA published products?
Silly Billy's avatar
I did, and Activision, now I'll probably add Ubisoft to the list too. I'm pretty choosy about who I give my money too.

this is funny because they didn't delay ac 3 to release on everything and marvel heros. so saying they want it to release on all platforms at one time is rubbish they didn't do that with ac 3. they should bring it out on tbe 1st of march for the wii u to keep the people who pre orderd happy but no

people should stop buying ea games they complain about dead space 3 being more action less sceary microtanfers. if you want your voice heard don't buy the game. if the game sells well they will do it again you will complain then buy it. pure example resi 6 sells 4million but people complain its not a true resident evil game don't buy it then ):

The latest development is Ubisoft are now teasing a new Wii U demo to try and soften the blow. Nobody cares though, Miiverse and the Ubisoft Facebook page are awash with protests. The Uplay Miiverse channel has now become the Ubisoft hate channel and is the busiest on Miiverse. Even non Wii U owners are joining the cause, this isn't going away in a hurry.

i have always chosen by the game never the developer but this is shocking treatment and the big three companies continue to take customers for mugs worst has to be activision which i see only release maps on other call of dutys for 41 pounds and leave ps3 players behind in all of this it's just disgraceful how many assassin creed dlc packs are there so far and ea are just a cash cow with there passes for online they did start this process does dead space 3 coop need one of these passes?

The fact that people actually think people will boycott Ubisoft in droves is absolutely foolish. Its a Rayman game people are forgetting. People bitch about EA all the time and they still sell record breaking sales. The fact of the matter is that as soon as soon as Ubisoft sell South Park, AC4, Watch Dogs etc, they'll still sell millions, and won't care about the couple of people that actually 'stick' to their 'boycott' of future games. The internet is a powerful tool and people will pretend to be more outraged than they are, but as soon as it comes down to it, they'll go out and get the games.

DW is quite correct here. The actual effect on Ubisoft's bottom line over this will be as non-existent as Legends sales as a Wii U exclusive would have been, and you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. The "outrage" from people we're seeing from people now is completely hollow and will amount to nothing when the next big Ubisoft title hits, guaranteed.

Yep, I agree with Gloria et al too. But I have a dilemma ... On the hand I want to boycott this game completely now (as a rule I usually boycott ubisoft due to their nefarious DRM on PC games, but Rayman Origins was epic), but on the other hand I've got a copy pre-ordered for 20 squid from somewhere, which is a great price for release if it gets honoured... There is a really disturbing trend of game publishers openly flaunting their utter disdain and hatred of their paying customers....remind me, why do we give these clowns our hard earned.......?
Dead's avatar
Easy answer, when it is finally released just be patient, there will be plenty of other games to play by then, and two or three weeks after release it will be in bargain bins everywhere and second hand for under £20.
