Sony: We need to do more to promote PS Vita

Sony has admitted that it must do a better job of promoting the PlayStation Vita.

EVP and chief financial officer Masaru Kato admitted this to analysts after Sony cut its annual sales forecast for the device for the third time.

"Now one thing clear for us that in terms of profitability, we have to do a better job in promoting the PlayStation Vita mobile product.

"How do we do that? Well, gaming business software is the name of the game. So as a fundamental measure, we are putting all - a lot of resources, not just first party, but also asking third parties to put out more attractive software.

Kato said: "The other thing, well, marketing, pricing of the product, et cetera, I cannot talk about pricing of this platform, but those are the things that we are looking into to improve our profitability in the mobile handheld gaming business."

Sony is already bringing some major new games to the device with Soul Sacrifice, Killzone Mercenary and Tearaway all due for release this year. However it's obvious that more needs to be done, both in terms of first and third party games. Will Sony succeed or is it already too late? Time will tell.?

sony: you need to lower prices on the handheld and the games and do something about the basic memory as your memory units are also a total rip of!

for a major game I can't say I've seen much in regards of adverts and the like. It's not just the console itself that needs a promoting revamp

Add some decent games!! The right games could make people splash out on cash just to play it. Like when i bought an xbox just to play halo 4. but now i do nothing with it.

I think that the memory card should be worked on more than anything, that's what has put me off the most anyway.

i cannot see this improving any time soon , if sony need to advertise more surely in the comming months they will be building the hype for the ps4 and its advertising , i think people will save there money abit more when this is announced properly

I own a vita and personally i think the psone games could be a pretty big draw though the pricing needs to be realistic. 7.99 for resident evil, dont think so. I amquite happy to pay £3 - £4ish but the main issue as mentioned is the memory card. I will not pay the asking price for this. It needs to be roughly £1 per gb to represent value no more.

Chop £50 off the price and bundle a game in. A GAME. Not a download code so you can joyfully stare at the download for 3 hours before you get to use your new console. Also bundle a £16GB memory card in and cut the price for every memory card in half. Also get more games out to the UK. There's quite a few games out in Japan that I wouldn't mind getting. What about those? Surely translating and localising these is cheaper than making a whole new game? Also do away with ports of PS3 games. Why buy a PSV title when the same game is on the PS3? Give them away as cross play for free sure. But no reason at all to buy a PSV version when you can buy the PS3 one, use the code and resell the PS3 back at a store.

they need to do some free stuff to those who already have them but how about a bundle like the old consoles with their mega games 3 in 1 cassettes

Marketing is a problem - all I've seen are naff ads, especially those ones where some players are flying through the air! If ever that was false advertising. Surely, the Vita should come with a health warning? ;)

it needs to be a bit more strategic how about when someone goes on websites around games ign for one and it pops up a vita ad on your iphone

Lower the price of the memory cards. The 8gb one is insufficient for general use (I filled it in next to no time, even some download only games like Escape Plan take up over 1gb) and the 16gb/32gb cards are extortionately priced....I know for certain this is the major reason that a few people I know are put off buying one. Also lower the price of the Vita itself....whilst it might be a great piece of kit, people just aren't willing to pay that much for a dedicated handheld gaming device anymore as Nintendo discovered with the 3DS. Slightly lower prices on the hardware could equal more sales all round. The damage already done to it's reputation might be irreparable though, unfortunately.

this was doomed in this generation of ipod users the quality is pretty good but other devices are not just games machines they are the works

Let's be honest here; handhelds are just a not-so-must-have extension to console and PC gaming - not the first platform most of us gamers are playing first. It's a luxury not all of us can readily add to the huge amount of money we already throw at this expensive sideshow. If I felt it equalled the platforms I already use, it'd be in my game stable as fast as money would allow! ;)

that was the idea they had for the vita to make it the ps3 extension it does not work

i think vita does have some good games but still priced high , if it came down in price then i might think of getting one , but it needs more games made just for that instead of ps3 copys

Even if I did get a Vita in the near future I wouldn't actually buy any games as I've got so many free gams queued up from PS Plus already (yes I add them even though I have no intention of getting a Vita).

very fair point regarding playstation plus but do games not expire from there

Yes...it seems to be a telling sign of the Vita's problems at the moment that Sony are giving it's best games away more or less free in an attempt to try and win people over. Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush are both excellent, PS3 quality games IMHO that are worth playing through (Gravity Rush was actually my favourite game of last year on any console) and now they've resorted to 'cross play' as well (such as with Playstation All Stars Battle Royale, Ratchet & Clank Q Force and Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time) where you buy the PS3 version and get a download code for the Vita version free of charge with it. On the other hand, the cynic in me says that by giving all the games away as free downloads (that eat up a lot of memory space), they're trying to trick Vita owners into paying for more expensive higher capacity Vita memory cards as that seems to be where they're clawing some of their money back. :P

It's good Sony have openly admitted there mistake, but most people in the industry knew this a long time ago.

They should have corrected it a long time ago.

I love the vita. It's a great system. However it just needs more games! (I price cut would also help. I am personally looking forward to Ragnarok Odyssey. That game is gonna be sweet!
