Nvidia Project Shield gets its boxing gloves on

Nvidia has been making big noises about its Project Shield console, which is due to launch later this year.

Currently the PC Giant has still to find a European distributor for the device, but apparently has plenty of interest.

What you want to know though is what's so good about it. So in that respect let's have a look at some newly released gameplay footage in which Vivid Games' Real Boxing takes centre stage.

As you can see, the game works well with the console's dual-analogue sticks and seems to make pretty good use of the Tegra 4 enabled device.

Project Shield has also been shown with Borderlands 2 running, albeit streaming from a PC. That's old news though, although we've posted that video below just incase you missed it.

Can this device really hope to compete in what seems to be a faltering handheld market? Nvidia certainly seems to think so. In fact it reckons this device could help it takes sales from the next gen consoles as well.

To be honest I can't really see this being a massive commerical success and I doubt it will even get close to Vitas sales figures. It looks a nice device for the teccy and i'll probably pick one up just to try it out but it just won't have that mass market appeal I think they are hoping it to have

another person here who doesn't think this will be a commercial success.Every handheld bar the 3DS has under-performed, despite some big budgets and confident developers.

I cannot see the reasoning behind this device. If your a pc gamer you'll play on your pc. The streaming function sounds good, but how often do your find yourself in the need to play something on your pc when your in another room from it (excluding of course toilet breaks :P )

So basically you need a decent PC to run decent games on it or all you get is mobile/tablet games? Sounds a bit crap.

I think i'll give this a pass, looks pish. No idea why they would come out with this, Not even going to come close to competeting with the 3DS and Vita

First impression was: not another handheld console; but look a little deeper (watch the video for more than a few seconds), you realise its just a very nice looking mini HD screen with a gamepad attached underneath. When I hear android then all I think of is mobile phone games (whether that's correct or not). If the PC is really the heart of the better games (to be played through it) then this feels even more of a luxury than the Vita!

“ Yeah just noticed that does seem a bit pointless now, i'll wait and see if Valve do release their steambox. ”

Well, whether it does well or not is irrelevant. I'm just happy there are more people giving console developing a try. If nothing else it should at least provide some competition to drive down prices.

The only handheld games that interest me are the ones you can pick up and play and then put down again. Turn-Based strategys and Pokemon. Otherwise, there isn't really any point on them for me. I had a PSP and it just didn't hold my attention due to lack of the above titles. Bar Valkyrie Chronicles.

Can you only stream games to the project shield or can you at least download it for the device, if not its a let down
