New patent uncovered for Sony's PlayStation EyePad'

Sony seems to be patenting everything it can at the moment and now another has emerged, which some are already calling the PlayStation EyePad.

The patent, discovered by Gamechup.com, stems from 2012 and says that while the PlayStation Move is useful for many types of games such as shooters and dance games, there are some applications where an alternative device may be more suitable, therefore this device seeks to solve this problem.

Looking at the picture and the description, the new device has the form factor of a tablet and includes a camera on either side of the device. This allows the 'Eyepad' to generate a 3D space from which you'd be able to play motion controlled games or use for other purposes such as Eyepet and perhaps even games such as Wonderbook.

The 'Eyepad' seems to be invented with the PlayStation 3 in mind, simply as an alternative to PlayStation Move. It does contain a touchpad much like the rumoured controller for PS4, so maybe with this creation Sony has PC style games in mind such as RTS titles and the like.

Of course this could come to nothing or possibly has already been discarded by Sony, but it's certainly interesting to see what problems Sony are trying to solve.

Check out the full patent application for yourself here.

I think this seems more like an early prototype idea for the Wonderbook when Sony were trying to work out how to make it work.

Sounds like a controller that would be specific to a new Eyepet game by all accounts.

Sounds like the Wii U pad with the cameras from the 3DS.

Touch pads and 3D cameras were around long before either of those devices.

I don't ever see this coming to fruitiion. They'll have moved on by now.

And also, the Eyepad name wouldn't stick. It works both ways....it takes attention away from Apples Ipad, but then apples Ipad would take attention away from the Eyebad. Crossed wires and all.

Plus Apple would undoubtedly sue them pretty hardcore if they released a pad device called "Eyepad" :)

would be really disappointed if they didnt try to do something like this but maybe if they had a camera which works like a kinect that would be cool

All the big three have toy divisions now - each trying to out-gimmick the other. Nintendo's 'Synapse' is on the way after the life-span of the Wii U is over (no gimmicks, just you and your thoughts! - you heard it here! ;)
