Sony begins mocking of Microsoft and Nintendo

It looks like Microsoft and Nintendo better get a sense of humour, because Sony has began to mock them.

A new google ads have appeared on the internet which seem to show a more aggressive stance from Sony when it comes to the competition.

"Jump Out!" says one ad, before continuing "PlayStation Changes Gaming 2/20". If you don't get the reference, Microsoft had an ad campaign which asked people to "Jump In". The other ad, which is slightly more humorous and certainly brought a smile to our face was "Yoga Isn't Gaming, See What PlayStation's Got 2/20.

Looks like Sony is starting to wise up to what Microsoft has been doing all these years. Maybe the change of advertising company was just what it needed.

Wii Fit isn't really a game, and it's hardly alone, all consoles have multiple fitness 'games'.
Dead 4 years ago

It's true, but the Wii Fit was massive on the Wii compared due to the board and stuff, compared to the 'fitness' ones like Zumba on the Wii/PS3/Xbox.
DynamiteWhyte 4 years ago

It's just a different application of a console, no better or worse than all the silly apps and multimedia stuff appearing across the board. At least they made a good job of it and created a whole new market in to the bargain.

Wii Fit created the false impression the Wii was a popular GAMES machine when casuals were buying it to use as a fitness machine and/or a children's toy/gift. As we have now seen with the Wii U doing so poorly though, that sub-market had absolutely zero loyalty to Nintendo and has abandoned them en masse. Honestly, they deserve to be mocked for their sheer shortsightedness with the Wii and Wii U.

Playstation changes gaming?
That'll be a first then.
PrometheusFan's avatar
The first time they did it was when the PS1 dragged gaming out of the niche, low selling hell it was stuck in since the 80s and turned it into an industry with actual mass appeal. Second was when the PS2 sent said industry through the roof to the point where gaming was a serious rival to the movie industry in terms of entertainment revenue generated. Probably they won't manage a third such shake up, but they at least have the pedigree of being capable of doing so on their side, so some benefit of the doubt has at the least been earned.

Yeah if Nintendo hadn't pulled out of the deal made with Sony back in the day when they toyed with the idea of having Sony develop a CD-ROM Drive for the Super Nintendo (Nintendo decided against it due to high piracy of discs), then Playstation in its current form would never have existed. I always smile when I turn over my SNES to see the expansion port that was never used, and think of the PS1 :)

Any company who mocks other companies, is a turn off for me, as they can not think up anything decent to sell their own stuff, and have to put others down. The fact that the Wii had more yoga type games than other consoles is what made the Wii the least favourite out of this gen, but the Wii is old news, and it is the Wii U now with hardly any of them so far, which is looking to be more promising than the next Xbox and PS4, as the Wii just seemed like an enhanced Gamecube to me and specs were worse than Xbox 360 and PS3 with games being more restrictive. At first I thought the Wii U was an enhanced Wii with HD, but the news that NFS Most Wanted on Wii U is actually better than the Xbox 360 and PS3, shows it can be more than just a HD Wii. The PS4 is more likely to block 2nd hand games as they have in reality acquired a patent for it. The Wii U seems more like a games console, where you can trade games with your friends or take the console to someones house. If the PS4 and the next Xbox are online only then it loses that appeal. My views could change after 20th Feb, but only if they confirm that 2nd hand games will not be blocked its entire lifetime

Tony you're right. NFS most wanted is better on the Wii U. Just a bit better. Considering the Ps3 & Xbox 360 are about 6 years old I don't think that is much of an achievement. With any luck the new generation of consoles will cripple the Wii U.
Konakona 4 years ago
Dead's avatar
That's one way of looking at it, another is with the PS3 and 360 devs have had 6 years odd to get to know the hardware and stretch it to it's limits, with the Wii U they are just scratching the surface of it's potential.

Haha, about time Sony did something like this. I have both a 360 and a PS3 so anyone who reads this, make sure you don't take it in a bias way. Sony had a powerful gaming machine, the PS3, but were too late releasing it and also had a stupid price. Them announcing their nextgen console first and having jabs at competition is pretty entertaining. I hope that Sony overtake microsoft because IMO they deserve it. They were just let down with their stupid Cell processor, which is why I moved to 360 because I couldnt stand PS3 ports.
superniceguy's avatar
Sony are not announcing their nextgen console first. Nintendo have already done so and released it, it is called the Wii U. It seems people are forgetting the Wii U, and Sonys dig is at the old Wii and not new Wii U. The PS4 (or the next Xbox) could be the best games console hardware in all history but if they use their patent to block 2nd hand games, then I do not see people getting it. Playing games brand new is not a problem, I rather do than then get a grubby scratched 2nd hand game, although mine are not, as I look after them, but the thought of paying in excess of ?40 and not have the option to sell it if you are done with it, is a turn off. Whatever hardware they use will still be not as good as the best PC. I am betting that Nintendo will overtake both MS and Sony, as it still console friendly, and Steam with their console will take the lead, as they alraedy have huge collection of games, with loads dirt cheap. It will be years before the next Xbox and PS4 start getting AAA bargain games.

I hope Sony have not bought Nintendo, then there will be no hope for console gaming. The Wii is lower spec than the PS3, and the Wii U has not got going yet. No trade ins = more money for publishers. More money for publishers = Games sell cheaper. Games selling cheaper = Consumer is better off. Everyone wins except trade-in stores. Look at steam for example. You cant "trade in" steam games, nor let your friends borrow them. But you can buy hundreds of games for very cheap. and it's going pretty well for them.

Sony have always been a load of hot air. The PS2 was a pretty good games console, but it never fulfilled its true potential of what Sony were saying the console could do and a lot of it never happened and its online functionality fell flat in Europe comapred to the US The PS3 got off to a slow start and people stuck witheir PS2s longer than people did with the original Xbox, as Blu Ray was not so popular and made the PS3 cost a bomb. The PS3 has only been getting going more so in the last year or so, and now moving to PS4? Games sell consoles, not the hardware. Sony can say all they want about their console, saying that it can do this and that, but if no one harnesses the power of the console, then the awesomeness is meaningless. Aliens is an example of poor end result when should have been a lot more. Also now there is the patent to to block 2nd hand games, and I really do believe this is going to happen, otherwise MS and Sony would have dispelled the rumours.
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
You can't blame Sony for Aliens. And you're having a go at them for the consoles being 'hot air' when the PS2 is the best selling non-handheld console of all time, and the PS3 is second only to a family friendly Wii this year in overall sales but will be ahead in profit margin. Games sell consoles, and Sonys exclusive games have sold the PS3 in GOW3, MGS4, Infamous, Uncharted etc.
DynamiteWhyte 4 years ago
superniceguy's avatar
I did state that the PS2 was a good console overall but it could have been a whole lot better because of the HDD and that never even reached the UK. It was said to be able to record TV, be used as an adequate machine for business and a whole lot more. Also I am not blaming Sony for Aliens, but lazy developers. EA can put the effort into making a better version of NFS Most Wanted, but not for making a better PC version of Dead Space 3. If Sony uses their patent for blocking 2nd hand games, there will be a lot more uproar over duds like Aliens, as people just wasted £40. At least people have the option to resell it, and get some of their money back If NFS Most Wanted is actually better then it shows that the Wii U is a better machine, and I doubt the PS4 or next Xbox will be able to make much better games than the Wii U, and if there are duds like Aliens then you can resell them on the Wii U.

Tony, you seem to be working under the impression everything you've heard about the PS4 is fact when it is all nothing more than rumour right now. Also, we all know the PS3 launch was a disaster was the price, but the reason people made the jump from Xbox to 360 so quick was that Microsoft literally abandoned the original Xbox once the 360 launched, like, completely abandoned it. Whereas the PS2 went for years longer and even saw many of it's best games come out after the PS3 was released (eg. God of War 2, FFXII, Persona 3 & 4, etc). This on top of the PS3's joke pricing at launch made going from the older console a lot less necessary than it would have been for Xbox owners to do the same. Plus, I am confused... in one post you imply all that matters to a console is games, and yet in you second post state the PS2 wasn't better than it was because it didn't have a HDD for non-gaming functions? Which is it exactly?
PrometheusFan 4 years ago
superniceguy's avatar
Like I said until they dispell the rumours, then they are more likely to be true and Sony have for a fact acquired a patent to block 2nd hand games. Until they clearly state that 2nd hand games will not be blocked then I will take it that they will, and that thought just does not get me excited in the next Xbox (which is rumour) and especially the PS4 (which is more than a rumour with the patent). I think that they think sites like Steam do well, and want a piece of the action, but they only work because of the awesome 75% off sales. Games for download on xbox live and psn store cost way more than retail. If they are looking at selling games at £5 or less like what Steam gets down to in the sales, then they can bring it on, but I think they are looking at selling games for £50 which is what most new AAA games sell for in the stores atm I am not saying the PS2 is a rubbish games console for not having extras. I am saying it was a good games console, but it could have been better further with all that add stuff. The Xbox 360 took off as it got plenty of support, and the lack of original Xbox support was not important. microsoft just moved on. The PS3 had fewer games, and they still supported PS2 more so. The Xbox 360 was the more viable purchase - cheaper and had more games.
superniceguy 4 years ago
superniceguy's avatar
Also the HDD could have brought out more games. In the US they got FF XI, which the UK did not get due to the HDD not being released. Even on the XBox I don't think it used the HDD to its full potential, although I think the game Blinx used the HDD to rewind time. On the Xbox 360 and PS3 the HDDs are used to install games, and reduce loading times.

I agree with what Kevin said, the PS2 was an incredible console, much much more adored by fans than the PS3 or 360. Sony have learned their lesson from what happened at the press conference for the PS3 when they announced the price which is why they ensured they didn't make the same mistake for the Vita when they announced the price of that. I know Sony won't disappoint in this upcoming conference
THussain 4 years ago
superniceguy's avatar
I am not saying the PS2 was a rubbish machine, I was saying that it did not reach its full potential, especially in the UK. The omission of HDD also meant some games could not be created for it. The bigger design was to house a HDD, which never happened in the UK. Not only did they state it was going to have one it did not get one its entire life for the UK, and the slim was created to remove the big hole that was left for the HDD. FF XI was not released in the UK because of it, and also many PS2 games did not have online functionality in the UK but did so in the US. The Xbox did far better at online than the PS2 did. The PS2 was an incredible console but should have been MORE incredible, and further so in the UK, to what Sony wanted us to expect from it when they initially announced it. To get the best of the PS2 I had to import the cosnole and games. Without the HDD we missed out some games or innovation from it. Even the US did, as without everyone being able to have the HDD, meant the developers could not use it, and saved making one game for the US and one for the UK, and so just did the one game for all, without HDD support.

All the advertising is recognising the childish nature of gamers and the 'mine's better than yours' B.S that so many still churn out towards each other. The advertising isn't great at the best of times - basically a misrepresentation of what gaming is all about - but to sink to mocking tones to 'turn us on' to their product is low and cheap. If I have all three major consoles, what does divisive advertising actually achieve?

Definitely the way to go in, despite all the bluster and bravado from Sony they are unlikely to have anything more than a slight upgrade from the PS3. They won't have anything earth shattering, it's just not the way they do things, they let others do that and then just copy them later.

@Gloria You're correct about the new Sony offering. Much like their 'emotion engine' in the PS2. Their claims back then never came into fruition and their machine was a step forward but not a leap into a new era. There is beginning to be less and less wow-factor as these devices are appearing. You can barely tell the difference between models now, and there is only so much our senses can distinguish before it'll be negligible to us.

Wii U has plenty of games for me atm. I'm actually enjoying playing some indie games for a change which I never would have played otherwise. Nintendo's stuff usually works out of the box. And did we ever get a slim version of the Wii? I recall the one coming that dropped Cube support but not one a year or two later. If I'm honest I just don't care about installment number 6 of the Killzone, Uncharted and LBP franchises anymore. I buy Sony consoles for the great Japan support they always get and the JRPGs. Which won't be appearing for at least a year or so.

Anyone from the UK remember the Manchester City Tevez thing when he just signed for City from Utd? Maybe not, as the billboards etc were only put up in Manchester, but still.

I hope they do mention about DRM, in the fact it will not happen to dispel the rumours. If they do not mention it at all, then I will assume they will do it or are thinking about doing it still. They may even start of not using the patent to block 2nd hand games, and then do so later. ONce you have the console then people will more than likley just accept it and buy games still, but if it has it from the start, then people are less likely to buy the console at all.
