Rumour: Next PlayStation will stream games, link to social networks

The Wall Street Journal has published a new report which suggests that the next PlayStation will stream games.

As we previously reported, it's been suggested that Sony will use its acquisition of Gaikai to enhance its new console, allowing users to play current PlayStation 3 games on the device. The new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs.

This is basically what we said a few days ago, except the Wall Street Journal is all but confirming it.

Elsewhere in the report, Wall Street Journal's sources also suggest that PS4 will interact heavily with social services, allowing you to upload directly to YouTube, straight from the console. It even suggests that you'll be able to 'compete' with other gamers, even though they may be on a different device.

Other social services are also said to feature heavily on the PS4, including Twitter and Facebook.

We will not know for sure until Wednesday, but the Wall Street Journal seems pretty confident.

It's not that exciting really. These have been basic features in consoles for years already. Well, at least in consoles not built to archaic design philosophies they have been...

It's obviously going to have a streaming gaming service of some sort (That WON'T include PS3 games, of that you can be sure) and obviously it'll have basic social network integration that the PS3 already has at the very least... so this basically reads like the WSJ regurgitating some common sense assumptions.

Great having those if there's a better way to input words. Not so much if it's just a pain and takes forever to input a word like it does on the PS3/Vita. Hoping for some keyboard support.

All depends how it's implemented, as an extra option rather than forced on you works well and can be a real timesaver.

I'm hoping that Remote Play will be on this for the Vita, I want more support for the vita. Games etc. Facebook and Twitter apps are old, I know a lot of people use them but its on plenty of consoles already. The disc and streaming thing is cool though :D

The PS4 streaming PS3 and below games through cloud by Gaikai's service makes a lot of sense. The PS4 is rumoured to be of an AMD CPU+GPU build, which is completely different from the PS3's Cell build. So backwards compatibility for PS3 games would not be possible on the PS4 unless they had a PS3 built into it as well, which would drive costs up. So streaming older games is probably the best option they could come up with. I'm just hoping that they don't make us pay for the games that we already own on disc or PSN. Hopefully they'll be able to recognise the games we have played on our console through PSN or the disc drive and let us play them online without issues.

I doubt it'll work like that, because it won't be able to tell the difference between games you own and one's you have rented, borrowed, or no longer own.

streaming sounds like a good idea, not sure how it would work tho, But the whole social media on console imo a waste of time, i buy a "game" console to just play games, save the apps for phones

But the games will be there regardless. Including these features is a convenience for many, and for anyone not interested... what difference do they make? Just don't install them and you'll never even need to look at them. Games consoles are simply too heavily tied to online networking and media integration by this point to just ignore such things though.
