Awesome to see these review scores!!!! I've got my pre-order paid for, I can't wait. Hopefully these scores indiciate the multiplayer is worth playing!!!

From what I've seen of the MP, the prerelease stuff was not very impressive. This is more of your quintessential single player action adventure game. I wouldn't get it for MP to be honest.

I'm supremely glad it got high scores. hopefully this means that my fears for the reboot and the addition of the multiplayer were in vain. We shall see

The only Tomb Raider games worth playing are Tomb Raider 1,2,3. And you'll need a PS1 for them. Everytime I hear Bay City Rollers, I instantly remember Tomb Raider 3...I'm 23 ;)

9.1/10 from IGN and its not developed by EA! My God thats good... I cant wait for this now. I was playing Tomb Raider Anniversary yesterday and have managed to get to the Final Conflict. I will miss the old Lara but this one (as I like to call her Aimee) looks exciting and with more of a story behind her.

little fun question for everyone. before playing this game, do you think tomb raider needed a reboot? remember your answer, play this game, then think again about your answer. its what im gonna do.
Whippyice's avatar
Absoloutly, They can now run the game as a serires and a story in her life and where she goes, they tried to introduce it to the game in the last few and you could see what they wanted to do with it. but it just wasnt working out they way they wanted it tolo, because they have rebooted this they essentually have a blank canvas to tell the story they want to, start to finish
Whippyice 4 years ago
LFC Bywater's avatar
Yeh i think it needed a re-boot. As a kid i loved all of the tomb raider games and just had to play them, but the more recent ones have been a bit 'meh' to me. Hopefully this one will get me into them again, these scored indicate it's a top quality game.
LFC Bywater 4 years ago

thats a damn good idea, i really hope they do that, like this one shes 16-17, then do one were she is 19-20 then 25-26, you can gain a lot of perspective on the different age ranges, games rarely do that (i can only think of legend of zelda OOT) so yes im all for that idea.

Personally I think the franchise needs a funeral rather than a reboot, I'm not a fan of reboots, they more often than not are used to crap all over what has come before. Tomb Raider had it's place in gaming history well established, now they want to rewrite all that? I'm sure it'll be a fine game, but why not just make it a new franchise, what is the point of rebooting, guaranteed sales I suppose, but if what they've made is good enough then it would sell on the strength of the reviews and word of mouth, no need to reboot a series that has already had a recent reboot.
Dead 4 years ago
J-D's avatar
see i would agree with that but sometimes a fresh new game that gets amazing reviews just crashes and burns so its always a safer bet to go with a brand name, i hate to say this but from a business move, its the right choice which you rightly pointed out, theres also some games that have had their direction changed and tagged on a brand name, i remember silent hill 4 did that, probably so they could sell more units on the name alone but theres the famous story of resi evil 4 that turned into devil may cry and that was a hit. problem is that you can't predict the future, sometimes bad games do good and good games do bad, the company wants to make money and will do anything to make that extra dollar, if a brand name can do that they will use it regardless of if its the right call but if they make it a great game and do well by lara and the tomb raider name then please by all means........just don't try to make it "uber cool" like bomberman act zero and we will be fine.

Quote IGN: "Tomb Raider is a little self-indulgent at the beginning – the first hour is a sequence of carefully scripted set-pieces and, yes, a cavalcade of button-mashing QTEs. But it's all for the sake of character development, and Tomb Raider is so good at this that you'll forgive the strict direction – especially after the game opens out past the 60-minute mark and lets you loose on the island." - 60 minutes of QTE! Groan! But at least it sounds worth it after that

In response to J-D: No I dont think I thought it did, I enjoyed it the way it was and although I wasnt a fan of Underworld, that wasnt the mechanics it was a case they didnt get the action/jumping/puzzle strategy correct. Also it was as buggy as hell. I remember getting to the Sheva temple and not being able to complete it as it didnt realise I had already picked up the gem
J-D's avatar
after chronicles it did indeed become more action based and yes the ratio was hit and miss here and there but i've heard people bash legend and underworld for its gameplay mechanics and to them i say "anniversary", that game was amazing and and it showed that the gameplay was not to blame, just poor level in legend and underworld. not to say both games were bad, legend was ok, underworld was passable but anniversary was leaps ahead.

Obviously these scores don't mean that I will necessarily like the game, but it's certainly an indication that they've made a stable game that would certainly be worth trying out. We've had quite a few game disasters recently so seeing something like this is very encouraging.

It seems Crystal Dynamics is really bringing back this game to its roots. The current gen retail titles (not Guardian of light) were all kind of meh. So good to see that this game is better than just average. Do want to try out at some point.

Was there ever any doubt it was going to be a good game? Did it really need to be a Tomb Raider game though? Personally I'd rather they revive the Legacy of Kain series, but I guess that wouldn't have sold as well.
LFC Bywater's avatar
Legacy of Kain was amazing. I got one on the original Xbox bot the name escapes me. I remember i paid £20 for it and at the time it was a bargain. one of the most enjoyable games i ever played. Would 100% buy it if they revived the series. I think it may have been called Defiance?

This was always my question. There was no doubt that the quality would be there, but it needed to be called something else. It was probably a toss up between "reboot" and "game that is clearly a more mature version of Tomb Raider" better to be the imitated than the imitator I suppose. I will play the game, but I'm not rushing to. It's on my rental list for now

Too much reliance on established franchises will be the death of this industry, why make an original game these days when you can just reboot, remake or sequelize something popular.
Dead 4 years ago

i actually think they wanted to make a new LOK game but it was either that or reboot castlevania and castlevania won out, i felt that it was more a LOK than a castlevania, perhaps they seemingly having both series in mind when making it but they stuck the castlevania name on the title, makes sense but its just a theory

I too hate the reliance on currently seated franchises. But new IPs scare publishers. Whether or not the reasons are logical, the fear of poor sales scares them off.

Wow... I don't really go by review scores much, but considering the actual reviews for this game are, for the most part, confirming every fear about this game that a lot of us had was on the money in terms of how it plays/is executed and such I find it a bit odd that it's still pulling in 8s and 9s out of 10. It sounds horrible :/
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
What fears? That it'd be different from the original Tomb Raider? I have no idea what the fears were. It sounds brilliant though.
DynamiteWhyte 4 years ago
PrometheusFan's avatar
Chiefly the over abundance of QTE sequences. Being different from the older games wouldn't be so bad if any new direction was pulled off well, but it really seems like it isn't. I'll give it a rent so I'm not just judging it off of second hand opinions completely, but it's not sounding so hot right now.

The game looks sharp, solid action sequences (from what I've seen) and I'm sure with Rhianna Pratchett writing it has good story. Still there's something which says this might not be for me, Lara seems a little weak. I know it's an origin story and it's to highlight how it's all new to her and she's frightened, but honestly I prefer playing as more straight up badass style characters.

Part of me is concerned about the generation moving forward. What I love about Tomb Raider games has been removed, I love exploration and puzzles and this isn't a Tomb Raider game. However I have pre ordered and I am looking forward to giving this game a go. The reviews are positive so I will go into playing with a clear head.

Nice to see it get great reviews. Considering Lara is young in this game hopefully we might see a few sequels in the years to come, instead of completely different Tomb Raider games being released every few years. From the clips I've seen it does seem a lot more gory than I remember Tomb Raider ever being. Although I'm no expert on Tomb Raider.

From the reviews I've seen, this reboot looks more like a cross between the scripted events of Uncharted, the exploration of Far Cry 3 and the small tombs from Assassin's Creed than classic Tomb Raider, which isn't a bad thing, but I get the impression the devs are playing it safe and not innovating enough, hoping that the name alone will generate the game large sales. We'll also see if the review scores have been inflated or not post release once more user feedback comes in.

Really hoping this has the potential to put Tomb Raider back on the map as the iconic title it always was... Nathan Drake has some competition here for sure! I must admit though, even though i've played through a couple of the classics, i've never owned a Tomb Raider game to date... Any recommendations on where to get back into the swing of things before being tempted by this new one, or should I just jump right in?
