Japanese Charts, Feb 24-Feb 24: Vita outsells Wii U

This weeks Japanese charts are in and despite the PS Vita price cut not quite kicking in just yet, it seems that the PS Vita is on the rise, well slightly at least. Looking at the charts below you'll see the Vita managed to outsell the Wii U, the latter of which had an extremely bad week in terms of sales. Vita sales weren't exactly shining, although that will surely pick up next week when the price cut takes full force.

As for the software charts, it was a great week for Platinum Games and Konami, with the excellent Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance debuting at number one on PS3 with a whopping 308,681 units sold. There wasn't too many other new entries, but it's good to see that it's not just handheld consoles which the Japanese are interested in.

Check out the charts below.

Guess that price drop helped! Hopefully they can keep the sales up.

Pretty much the price drop. IIRC it was pretty huge as well. I think the drop was almost as much as $100 equivalent in Yen.

Vita price drop doesn't come into effect in Japan until tomorrow. I think there were a few stores that implemented the drop early, but it's still not nationwide yet. Next week should see a bigger increase for the Vita you'd imagine.

looooooool 473 Xboxes sold in Japan this week. Japanese charts are always fun to see because you see games that you'd not see elsewhere. 3DS is lighting things up over there. Amazed BO2 is in the charts in Japan. Didn't think they liked those kinds of games.

Well... I was off by about a month, but the Wii U ended up going south of Vita in sales numbers in what should have been it's biggest market... and this is before the major Vita price cut has gone nationwide in Japan and some of the big titles coming in March have come out (Soul Sacrifice, Phantasy Star Online 2, and an assortment of others that only the Japanese could possibly care about...). This situation is only going to get worse for Nintendo, who literally have nothing to appeal to the Japanese consumer with currently announced for the Wii U this year, let alone anything releasing anytime soon.

Makes sense. I don't believe there's been a game released at all for the Wii U since launch. Software sales for Mario seems to about the same. And Tank Tank Tank is doing better too. Luckily for Nintendo they have the 3DS. No doubt sales will pick up once Dragon Quest X Wii U hits next month (I think) too. And then it should be a bit better with the likes of Pikmin coming soon after so I doubt Nintendo are that worried. If they have to they can coast on the sales of the 3DS, implement a price drop around Christmas to go with Mario , Zelda and Mario Kart and watch sales rise A LOT of the Japanese stores dropped the price of the Vita since the announcement. I know a few people who have bought a few cheap to resell over here on ebay. I guess there was no real reason to wait to drop the price. Luckily with Soul Society, One Piece and Phantasy Star we should see a rise in sales, whether or not the Vita will take off any further is yet to be seen

Zelda Wii U will be out no sooner than 2015 according to Nintendo, and you aren't going to see a new Mario 3D title AND Mario Kart this year. One or the other maybe, but definitely not both... and even then, there's no guarantee they'll see a rise in hardware shifted nearly as big as some expect (Case in point: The Gamecube didn't see sales skyrocket after it got it's major titles on shelves. The Wii didn't need them as it was a hit from day one of course, but the Wii U's situation is much closer to the Gamecube than the Wii right now). Wii U needs a price cut... a BIG one, before it's system sellers arrive if it's to have any chance of a dramatic improvement imo.

Also... Dragon Quest X is already available on Wii at a lower price than the Wii U version will be and it's already known that there's no new game content in the Wii U version, just HD upscaling on the visuals. I wouldn't expect that to help very much.

Would like to play COD 'dubbed edition' and pleased that Vita has picked up. Sad news about the Wii U though, hope that picks up again.

That's more like it from the Vita. Hopefully after the slow startit can improve but I think here and the USA it's biggest battle is with Apple and not Nintendo to try and claw a bit of the tablet generation back!

I would be interested to see how much of an effect, if any, the release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will have on the Wii U. After all Monster Hunter is quite big in Japan.

I see Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the list under 3DS. Has it already been released on Wii U in Japan?
