Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag details arrive

Details of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag have emerged at last.

What we know so far is that rather than playing as a character such as Desmond, you'll instead be playing as yourself, a member of Abstergo Entertainment whose job it is to research the memories of Edward Kenway, a British Privateer in the Navy and father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin's Creed III.

The game is set within a truly open world of land and sea, with transition between missions being seamless (i.e no loading screens). Ubisoft has also promised that Kenway will be able to jump onto his ship, sail off with his crew, board other vessels, plunder and then head back to land and cause the same style of havoc there too. It all sounds a bit 'Pirates of the' Caribbean' to us.

The setting for the fourth game is the18th century Caribbean, which means you'll be able to visit Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas as well as others placed along the South America coast. There will also be various ships to use, while you'll also need to find a crew to sail them All in there will be 50 navigable locations.

As for combat, it's said to combine the weaponry of the Assassin's Order with armaments of the era. Multiplayer will also be included, although further details on that are yet to be revealed.

"With the new hero and new setting we are creating the boldest and most unique Assassin's Creed game yet, while still respecting the pillars of the franchise that have made it such a fan favorite," said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft. "Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag is based on a true, harsh and exciting part of a legendary era and will thrill longtime fans and newcomers alike."

We look forward to hearing more details on this game in the near future.

Just posting "yawn" as the first comment on any article is pretty much as worthless as contributions to discussions anywhere on the internet come imo.

It was the 'ease of use' that got me in the video. Hopefully transfers to ingame. They will have been working on it on Watch Dogs so hopefully they've got it right.

Actually makes me interested. More interested than I was in AC3 anyway. Think I need to get around to completing that then I can see how this Haytham character lines up.

This is the first time I have been excited for an AC game before release. AC1, AC2, Brotherhood and AC3 (didn't like ACR) were all good games but I didn't think anything like 'this is set in America? Yay!' or 'Italy! Excellent!' before release. I really like pirates though so this is definitely a must buy for me.

Been reading some more in-depth info on the game today and I like what I'm hearing. Fully open world sailing as exploration rather than merely as single mission outings, underwater swimming/exploration, minimised "present day" crap... this is pressing all the right buttons for me so far. All I want now is free roaming piracy/ship raiding and I am in. Just hope the next gen version is close to current gen versions on release dates, as I'd sooner go next gen with this if I can after what a technical mess AC3 was.

With the no loading times and such, you'd hope they've overcome any problems that were in AC3. Can never guarantee though. I'd be getting it on PS4 too just so I had some games to kick off with while I cought up on my back catalogue on PS3.

As much AC3 bored the hell out of me I will keep a close eye on this as having a fully open world is music to my ears. Here's hoping multiplayer has a huge revamp, and there's no more silly requirements for %100 sync
