PS Vita sales quadruple in Japan

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano has said during a One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 presentation in Japan today that PlayStation Vita sales in the country have increased around four times compared to what the system was selling before the recent price cut.

Two weeks ago, PS Vita was selling around 11,000 units, so we presume that means sales of around 40,000 units this week.

We'll certainly keep you informed when this week's Japanese charts arrive later this week.

Thanks, Getmasu.

Still getting trounced by the 3DS though ;)

The 3DS isn't even the competition at the moment. At least now it won't hopefully sell less than the PSP lol.

Good news there. Hopefully it keeps up and they then put the price cut out to Europe/North America.

Only a slight rise then :P Hopefully they bring that price cut over here, will consider saving for one then.

What games have released there recently or has there been a price drop?

Price drop, should help for a while, but games are what it really needs.

Soul Sacrifice is released on Thursday in Japan so I think the price cut came at the right time for the console

Doesn't sound like a HUGE rise, but it's going to look a lot bigger comparatively when lined up against next week's Wii U sales I'm betting :)

Even with a price drop it will still need more games for me to purchase one. As I don't care for jrpg's.

Japanese people do though. And the announcement of a couple of RPGs in with the price cut will definitely have caused the number increase

This is great news, I'd really like to see the Vita do well as I feel like it's a brilliant piece of kit. Shame Pirate Warriors 2 isn't coming on the Vita over here though,

I'm surprised that the Vita has quadrupled in sales so early into the price cut. It still needs better games to be more successful in my opinion. And perhaps a memory card price cut too.

Presumably they have PS Plus to thank for this as well? Even I'm getting tempted by a Vita after not being at all interested, but thanks to Plus I've got several games 'bought' and waiting to be played.

Good news, hope this gives Jap devs more reason to make consoles for it and hopefully Sony will realise something similar needs to be done in other territories. Specifically, the price of the memory cards.

Strange, I was just looking at Customer Reviews of the Vita on the shopto site, and instead of actual reviews it's a newsfeed of related articles - including this one! Anyway, just been looking at the games that are available and I'm not overly impressed. The 2 I'm most interested in are Oddworld and Metal Gear Collection - both of which are also on the PS3.

I noticed this too when they started sorting out the site. Quite a good thing.

This is what I've been waiting to hear. More Japan Vita sales=More JRPGs. Just what I want.

we need slayers translated or a new game in the series.

That is one old game series. For now I'm just praying to god for the new legend of heroes on the Vita/PS3 to get localized when they release.

I guess its really true, Japanese really will buy a system just for one game. Not as though I wouldn't do the same depending on the game though.

Not THAT amazing when put into perspective against what the 3DS did last week alone, but then again that may drop too. Just hope it takes off a bit more and we start getting some JRPGs to make the purchase worthwhile over here.

Speaking of Sales and the Vita. America is gonna get four free games (even if you don't own PS+) Hope they do that here too.
DynamiteWhyte's avatar
Probably not. They do give Americans 20% discount on all PSN stuff at every $50 interval. We just get left out.

We kinda do get left out on any console tbh but hey at least we got america raging when we got sleeping dogs on ps+ ;)

Sucks how Sony treat European gamers really, but we (not the UK) don't have brand loyalty so it doesn't effect us that badly. I wish we did get some free games though.
