LEGO City Undercover download requires external HDD

The digital version of Lego City Undercover requires you to have an external hard drive for your Wii U, according to Nintendo.

A poster for the game has appeared and seems to suggest that even those with a premium Wii U will require external storage.

It's currently being reported that suggest the digital version weighs in at around 22GB and so with?the Premium packing a 32GB and the Basic Wii U only having 8GB, it seems like extra storage will be the way to go. Although personally, we'd rather just grab the disc and not have to wait three days for the game to download.

If you're with us, then purchase your disc copy of LEGO City Undercover below.

Wait..... WHAT?!?!? That can't be right surely? I'm not sure what to say to that. Ok, the disc based version will be better, no doubt. But how does any dev/publisher/console manufaturer expect to usher in the digital age with this kind of nonsense?

Nintendo gave the freedom for anyone to buy an external HDD based on their download habits - which the PS360 didn't as much - so, when you can get a HDD far bigger than 32GB for even the typical price difference between a Basic and Deluxe Wii U, well, there's really no excuse not to have enough space...! Tekken, a launch game even, being around 20GB really should've woken people to said fact - and SSB4 will definitely be one of the few using the dual-layer for [near or full] 50GB capacity. People wanted to be able to download retail titles. They got 'em. Nuff said.

So you're basically saying buying a premium console was pointless? If you could get said hard-drive to cover the space. Fact is most people don't want to have something hanging next to their console. And I have a hard-drive that connects pretty fine in to my PS3 and can save games etc to it. For the £50 more you're basically getting a controller and a nice black cover compared to the white one if you're going to need a hard-drive anyway.

Plus the premium bonus program or whatever it's called that rewards you for online purchases.

You also get Nintendoland. Which retails at £30-£40 most places. And it's a hard copy I believe too. So you can resell it if you don't want that title. I can't remember what is in the premium pack anymore. I got the Zombiu one which came with tons more extras so.

22gb? Bit massive that. Highest download I've had on the PS3 has been about 7gb.

If i remember right, Mass Effect 3 is 13-14Gb. But 22Gb is not only an obscene number, but a bit of a killer when your HDD is only 32Gb. The machine should have had 32Gb by default. the premium should have been 128

It should have been large. PS3 started at 60gb but this was before more games were on the digital distribution, and it has evolved since. If they knew games were going to be this big, they should have done a better job. Imagine downloading this, you'd basically have a 'basic' version of your console + Lego City Undercover.

I should clarify, I meant ME3 on PS3. Not WiiU. I don't know about WiiU. But you're right. you can't release a game, essentially just out of the launch window of a console, that kills the HDD. I've lost a little faith in Ninty here.

Not surprising. Ken's Rage 2 was about 14-15GB

What?! 22gb is a ridiculous amount! Haha

Good job Nintendo don't use some stupidly expensive proprietary storage system ;)

Neither do Sony... for their full size consoles anyway

Don't think this will be too much of an issue as most will just buy it retail anyway. Still a very large amount of memory though.

Not an issue. Anyone who was intending on downloading plenty of titles will have had a large HD drive bought. And the majority of the people this title is mainly targeted towards will be buying it on Disk or whatever

Er sorry boys and girls but the Wii U is just not in anyway a premium console wow nintendo seem to be really good at p1551ng off the loyal fans who went out and got the Wii U, I havent even got one but i really dont understand how the Wii U is shaping up and what theyre strategy is when it seems that at least once a week theres a ludicrous announcement like this!!!

Most of the people buying this are gonna be getting it on Disc. It's stories like this that blow everything out of proportion.

Been getting some good review scores so far.

Looks like a great game so i expected good scores. There will be the odd rubbish review out there though probably from Eurogamer..

Eurogamer gave it a 9, it was Edge that gave the one bad review, their main criticism being there was no movie licence attached.

Hardly a good reason to give it a bad score.

Exactly, most the other reviews seem to think it's a plus as well, Edge are funny though, they will mark some games down for the most ridiculous reasons sometimes.

Although personally, we'd rather just grab the disc and not have to wait three days for the game to download... Tell me bout it . As long as developers and co continue to make the digital download versions outweigh to goodness of a disc, im stickin with disks . DLC is great for XBLA games but we aint got the infrastructure for massive gb games yet
