Criterion not working on new racing game, "it's time for something new"

Criterion's Alex Ward has revealed that the studio are not working on a new racing game, but in fact something entirely different.

"Here is what I want folks to know," he began, in what went on to be a large amount of tweets, "Some folks are eternally disappointed. Nothing I can do about that. So many tweets asking for new Burnout. Equally many tweets asking for a new NFS game from us. Also Road Rash," he continued.

"Whilst I love all of those games, I am personally not doing any. After over a decade of making racing games it's time to make something new. It is early days thus I have nothing to 'announce' or talk about."

"I am proud of all of the Burnout games. When it feels right we will make another one. We are creative people," he said.

In addition to the above he also revealed that it won't be a sequel to Black (Criterion's only non racer) either.

"I will do my best to keep folks in the loop who want to follow what we play or what inspires us. Or what we might be listening to. But if you are following me expecting some Megaton of a new Burnout game, or an Underground remake then I have to disappoint you," he added.

"I hope you will join us on a new journey. Hope it makes sense. Thanks for the support everybody. We won't let you down."

I enjoyed Black, I'm a little disappointed it won't be a sequel... Unless this is them saying they are going to be helping EA release an annual shooter with DICE and Respawn

Goodbye Burnout. It was awesome while it lasted. and it was almost as good when every year we hoped you would get another release. Wonder what these guys have up their sleeves then

It's the beginning of the end for them I fear, not a good idea turning your back on what you're good at. Black was OK, technically great, but just felt a bit soulless, glad they aren't going there again. But I have a feeling that whatever they do will suffer from the same issue.

As it will take a while for the new consoles to get established I am glad they are taking some time to experiment with something new and fresh to them. Hopefully it will be good and when they go back to making racing games they will be bursting with new ideas for the next WiiU/PS4/Xbox game.
