Reggie: 3DS and Wii U releases will be ramped up 'significantly' over the next nine months

Nintendo's US boss Reggie Fils-Aime has told GamesIndustry.biz that the pace of releases on both 3DS and Wii U "is going to be dramatically ramped up" over the next year.

"What I would say about Wii U - and what Mr. Iwata has said - is that the pace of launches has been slower than we hoped. But as we prepare for E3, the pace of launches for Wii U is going to dramatically increase" - well it could hardly slow down, so this is good news.

3DS couldn't be any different really, we've already seen plenty of fantastic titles released for the system and according to Reggie things will only get better.

"We have 15 Nintendo-published titles available, both physically and digitally [on the 3DS]," he said. "So far in 2013, of those 15 available in this format, 11 per cent of sales have come through full digital downloads of those games.

"So far in 2013 - through April 15 - 3DS game sales are up 55 percent versus last year, counting both physical and digital."

It's good to see Nintendo getting serious, although we do wonder how many of those 'ramped up titles' will include the name Mario in the title.

Pokemon and Fire Emblem X Shin Megami if it's brought out over here. Couldn't really care for the rest, but those two are worth the world.

Nintendo will be publishing Fire Emblem x Shin Megami, so no doubt it'll arrive.

Ramping up Wii U releases "significantly" for Nintendo wouldn't be hard as they'd literally only need to release one game for that to be true, as they haven't released anything for the console since launch. 3DS hasn't been much better (Fire Emblem will likely be the first 3DS game I've bought since Kingdom Hearts last May (June?). It's had a barren schedule since then if you aren't into mascot nostalgia. 3DS at least does have a healthy line up from here on out at least though, so that's something.

3DS is beast, the Wii U is not really taking off, but if they support it enough and by support I don't mean throw Mario at it over and over again, then it could take off, but I'm not sure how good it is from a spec perspective will it be able to hang with PS4 and Nextbox? I think if they released this a couple of years ago it would have gone like cup cakes, but as it is now it feels like it's just there.

Most likely if they threw Mario at it over and over again it WILL take off. 3DS sales exploded once Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart arrived.

3DS sales exploded after the massive price cut. Mario 3D and Mario Kart were released months prior to that and they both had minimal effect on the console's declining sales. There has yet to be any instance of a Nintendo first party title causing a massive spike in a home console's sales (See: Gamecube, Wii was already selling big numbers before those games released, so it was the Wii that sold them, not the reverse on that occasion). It really is going to take a lot more than throwing the same mascots at the problem to fix the Wii U's failure. Massive price cut before it's lost in a sea of next gen console hype would be a good first step for one thing.

Price cut was like October 2012 time for 3DS, then Mario and Kart came out in the November/December after. I remember cus I had the ambassador stuff when I started work that August which I think was just before the cut. I agree it needs a price cut. But simply cutting the price now will do nothing in the long run till the games are out. The Vita's sales in Japan are prime example. Great for like 3 weeks and then because nothing is coming out it's barely selling more than it was prior to the cut.

You've got to love Captain Herpes, I mean kevins logic.

Joe is right. It couldn't get any slower. The amount of Wii U games released desperately needs to pick up, too many games being delayed.

Hmm, actually I was remembering incorrectly it seems. The price cut WAS prior to Mario and Mario coming out, with the price cut occurring in July 2011 and Mario and Mario releasing in November 2011. Sales did see escalation after the price cut far more than they did after the release of those two titles though. I was still mostly correct though... I guess. And yes Gloria, most people DO love logic, because without it the world would probably be a cesspool of childish ignorance.

Yeah, the world would be full of people like Kevin. What a wonderful world that would be. So Kevin. If games don't sell a console and price cuts do can you explain the Vita for us?
