Rate the Rumour: Next Xbox delayed due to Sony Blu-Ray exclusive deal

Here's a rumour which may or may not be true. It's being reported that the next Xbox is delayed into 2014 due to Sony holding a 10 year exclusive deal on console based Blu-ray movie playback.

Apparently Sony has this deal tied up until 2014, meaning that Microsoft would not be able to release its console unless it wanted it to do so without playing Blu-Ray movies.

The rumour comes via an Italian entertainment distributor, who is suggesting that the only console we'll see released this year is the PS4.

2. possible, I suppose, but it's not like Sony own the rights to Blu-Ray. They are owned by a conglomerate that jointly decide who does and doesn't get the rights. This, at least is how I understand it. If there's a delay in the new Xbox, it's more likely going to be to remove and or implement anti-piracy measures after the uproar over always online

3, the WiiU has a bluray drive I think, but has no movie playback.

2 - And even if this is true I dont think it will stop microsoft from releasing it. They probably just lock the feature until sonys deal up, and then bring out a update that allows for blu ray movie play.

very interesting! I say unlikely.... The PS3 wasn't released in '04 though so if there was a shred of truth to this they'd also say that Microsoft couldn't use the feature until 2016 surely?

wouldn't surprise me 1 bit, considering Sony's antics with the Dreamcast when they released PS2 telling all retailers to put Sega's console at the back of the shop! On the other hand it's probably unlikely and i do not or would not use a console to play blu ray movies, i have a dedicated player for that!

2. I doubt Microsoft wants Sony to have Christmas to themselves. If it was true, I could see them releasing it without Blu-Ray playback and just adding it in later through an update or something. Besides, if Sony had a 10 year deal until 2014, Microsoft would have known about this for ages.

Wouldn't put it past Sony, they'll do anything to nobble the competition, but I don't think so. ;)

definitely 1 Anything else would mean Sony is undermining it's own standard, this way Sony benefits from MS adopting it.

1 - Sony Don't Hold any such deal, because they are part of the BDA any such deal would be solely supporting their own needs which the BDA wouldn't support. For those that don't know the BDA is the Blu-ray Disc Association where there are 19 companies on the Board of Directors, such as HP, LG, Samsung, Sony, 20th Century Fox..etc..etc

5 Sony is a proprietor of the BluRay format just like it was with the DVD and CD prior. The other companies who have the capability do so at Sony's express permission. Most people don't know this. The Xbox 360 was supposed to feature BluRay as well and it was this same obstacle which led it to settle for HD DVD.

1 - I highly doubt Microsoft will let Sony get 1 year as only High end consol on the market, since it could cause Microsoft sales for next Xbox to drop to Japanese level of Sales

i remember that sony was reporting losses in the blu ray department when they first came out, they did help make the technology and was the first to use it on a console so that it could help boost the blu ray reputation (remember the ads, 7.1 surround sound, 4x clearer than dvd) as of late blu rays only seem to be in the norm. this doesn't surprise me to hear that they got a 10 year deal rights
