EA and Disney sign Star Wars deal

The Walt Disney Company and Electronic Arts today announced a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all platforms and the most popular genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

"This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come," said John Pleasants, Co-President of Disney Interactive. "Collaborating with one of the world's premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world."

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe," said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. "Three of our top studios will fulfil that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

This could go either way. Always been a fan of Start Wars games but would mainly be looking for a new battlefront game. Online on that would be chaos.

I am fairly happy, may be the start of a Star Wars/Dead Space love affair. This has to go to Viscreal

First person lightsaber wielding SW game was my dream from the very moment of a Move controller release... Fingers crossed.

EA know Star Wars will make them money, so will happily put in time to this which could breathe fresh air in to the franchise.

Not got great hopes for this, EA can produce decent games when they want to, but they've also given us some right stinkers and a ton of dross. I have a feeling these will fall in to the latter camp and end up being movie games based on the new movies.

Nice with bioware we could be seeing another RPG like knights of the old republic, reckon if they do it will span the gap between return of the jedi and the new films. Having a new battlefront game would be good as well from Dice and so far have not been let down by visceral so overall im looking forward to this. Would be good to see another republic commando and another star wars RTS as well.

DICE to work on Battlefront 3, Visceral to work on 1313, and BioWare to give us a new KoTOR... I'd buy one of each

TBH I wouldn't want Bioware to make a new KOTOR game since the team that made KOTOR 1 is long gone
