EA scraps Online Pass

An EA executive has confirmed that the publisher is scrapping use of the Online Pass.

The passes which came with most EA games, required users to enter a one-time code to access online service, however they have now been scrapped due to negative user feedback, according to EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg.

"Yes we're discontinuing Online Pass," Reseburg told GamesBeat. "None of our new titles will include that feature.

"We Initially launched [the pass] as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn't respond to the format," Reseburg continued. "We've listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward."

What do you think of this move? Are you pleased? It'll no doubt please certain retailers who make a huge profit out of second hand games.

Maybe this is a bit of customer service finally, however like the government if they remove on "tax" they add it on elsewhere... ever the optimist..

It'll please a few retailers. Until they realise that this is a pre-emptive move towards not allowing used games. Call me a cynic, but I would guess that with Sony already saying that the firmware to prevent used games is going to be there in PS4, but they'll allow publishers to decide whether or not to use it, EA will opt to use the service, forcing a New game or No game policy.

Yeah I imagine the Online Pass(es) made EA a lot of money, they wouldn't be scrapping it unless they had something else ready.

It does make you worry about next gen presume there is something in the pipeline maybe as trouble says there will be things inside the console to block used games.

I like this but I am also a bit worried about what else they have planned instead. I get the feeling they will just throw ingame purchases at every game. Now if they do it like Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer and purchases are optional and just for people who don't have the time to play properly then thats fine. However if they did it like a facebook game (run out of energy, wait a day or pay money) then I won't buy any more of their games :P For now though I will enjoy this news. Thanks EA.

Micro Transactions probably cover enough that the online pass is redundant. Also like region locking the anti-preowned brigade is gonna be down to the publisher.

Yep, probably as has been said they'll have something else in store to combat the second hand games 'threat'. Personally I don't know anyone who ever bought an online pass, maybe they just weren't that successful and that's why they are being switched for something else.

I appreciate the fact they are stopping them but I do forsee an announcement in the near future to counteract the use of Pre-Owned media such as a Licence code (ala PC Games) or some such. Who knows, maybe they'll move to DLM only and will no longer sell hardcopy media, they've already done so with the manuals after all!

Either MS have stopped second hand games on their next console or Nintendo's refusal of online passes has twisted EA's arm. I'm guessing it's the former as Nintendo and EA are in the process of ruining any chance of EA games on the WiiU.

I miss manuals. They're either non-existant or just very poor now. I miss being able to read a characters description on one, or just reading through one. I remember using the first one to help me get started on Pokemon Blue. The days....

Manuals are replaced by controller maps in game and codex instead of backstory

This is good news for those buying used, but don't mean anything for me.

Please describe the nature of the abuse:
