Kaz Hirai: PlayStation 4 is 'First and Foremost' a games console

Sony boss Kaz Hirai has said that the PlayStation 4 is "first and foremost" a game console.

Speaking during the D11 conference yesterday, Hirai said the PS4's focus on video games is essential if its to convince early adopters to buy the machine.

"The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers," he said. "If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3."

That's not to say that the PS4 won't have non-gaming functions, it's just that Sony will choose to focus on these after its talked about the games.

"Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but it's first and foremost a video game console."

Could this mean Sony will spend some time at its conference talking about services other than games, while Microsoft focuses its entire conference on games? It's certainly a possibility.

Show s what else it can do, sure. But keep the games the focuss and don't try and sell me any tech that tracks pubic hair movement and it'll be a lock for Sony!

If they were intelligent, they'd use E3 to put to bed any concerns people have in regards to DRM, costs etc. Then they'll go all out game focus. Use other venue's such as a Sony Conference to talk about what the system CAN do. That'll mean that anyone who doesn't want to watch it, doesn't have to.

I'd bet on a coupe of surprises left back for Gamescom in August too. from both companies.

At least Sony made the smart move, Microsoft seem to be going too much towards other entertainment but who the heck buys a console to watch TV, talk on skype or post on twitter? Even if i buy an Xbox One i will still be doing all that stuff on my PC

SOny look set to rule the next generation. Nintendo have lost with the WiiU. Its failing so hard and the games are really looking weak. Nintendo has resorted to selling reskinned DLC as full games and remaking old games. Microsoft have made it clear that games aren't their main focus and sold off many of their studios to the point they hardly have any left. So that leaves Microsoft with very little exclusives so they are reduced to trying to secure timed exclusive content for titles. If rumours are true then Activision are preferring Sony's ideas and will join Ubisoft in offering 100% exclusive content for PS consoles. Apparently the new COD and Destiny have exclusive content on PS4. And unlike Microsoft they stay exclusive.

@Mark, the new CoD still has timed exclusives on Xbox One, MS just pays them too much.
